As all Pretty Little Liars fans know, Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) was exposed as ultimate cyberbully “A,” and thrown in the looney bin. But that doesn’t mean we’re through with “A”...
Cast members have been teasing for days that for Season 3, debuting June 5, “A”’s reign of terror will continue in a new form — whether it’s another person or a team. And according to star Ian Harding (Ezra Fitz), this second “A” will be even worse, making more deadly threats against the girls of Rosewood.
Wetpaint Entertainment recently caught up with Ian on set, to get the scoop on the new intimidator who will keep everyone shaking in their (stylish) boots.
The previews make it look like the new “A” is really setting her sights on Aria (Lucy Hale). Will she also set her sights on Ezra?
Ian Harding: Perhaps. He/it/they — the “A” Team is going after the girls pretty evenly. And it doesn't seem as much like, “I will tell your dad that you're having a relationship” anymore. That was peanuts in comparison to where they are going. And I keep saying this and I apologize but it's truly like the ante is up. Now the danger is more. It's not just like “You will get kicked out of school.” It's more like, “You might lose your life.”
Will Ezra find out what “A” did to the girls?
I think he's been informed on it because there is a moment where I say — because all the girls have a little bit of PTSD — he's aware of what happened. There are two people that are dead and I can’t suddenly be like, “Why are you stressed all the time? What's going on?” So he's aware but I think how into the fold he's going to be brought is what we’re going to see. You'll have to find out.
Some have speculated that you are going to be “A” for a while. Would you like your character to go down a dark path eventually?
I would like to see a little bit more of the darkness to Ezra because right now his biggest problem, apart from perhaps his relationship, is he was almost married once. All right — that's like a quarter of America!
So you wouldn't mind if Ezra took a walk on the wild side?
No! If suddenly we found out he is like, completely split personality, I think that would be awesome! Are you kidding? He's shooting people in back alleys or he comes in one day and is like, “I'm so sorry — I kill people professionally. That's how I can maintain this apartment and my sick–ass Prius and not be employed.” Yeah, let's do that!
Would you like to see one of the main four girls end up being the other “A”?
I think that would be cool [but] I don't know how they would do that unless she was a complete sociopath like Mona (Janel Parrish).
You and Aria can team up and both go down a dark path together!
Totally! Or we can hunt this person down. I don't want the show to go in a paranormal direction and suddenly the reason “A” is there is because she is a ghost! That would suddenly lose a lot of respect. But I could feasibly see that. It would be difficult. I think the web is probably closer to home than they expect, maybe quite literally. But I'm excited to see where it goes.
How did you feel about the big reveal of “A” at the end of season 2?
I felt good about it because I know Mona was “A” in the books, the first four, which I actually stopped reading after that because my character didn't show up again and I was like “Ugh, okay. There's the end of my contract!” But I think the writers did a really good job of sending out all kinds of different red herrings and getting the focus off of Mona. And now that we know she was “A,” I think it's cool that we now are starting to see that maybe she was a puppet or maybe she was part of something bigger. But that's not saying much because she is on meds!
