Of the many mind-blowing clues on Pretty Little LiarsSeason 3 Halloween episode (Season 3, Episode 13: “This Is a Dark Ride”), one of the most significant was the very last scene when a hand reached out from under the ground, as if someone had been buried alive. Many fans were confused as to whether this was a flashback or present day, and showrunner Marlene King has an answer.

In an interview with TVLine, Marlene was asked to clear up the mystery.

“This was never intended to confuse people,” she says. “That is from the past and was never meant to be present-day Halloween. That [setting was] the gazebo’s perimeter.”

In a strange way, this confirmation actually creates more questions than it answers. We know that Page 5 of Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) autopsy report says that she had dirt in her lungs, signifying that she was buried alive. But does the hand reaching up mean that she eventually made it out of that shallow grave? If so, who killed her a “second” time?

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that Byron Montgomery (Chad Lowe) murdered Alison, and buried her alive. If Ali eventually made it out of that grave, did someone else find her and whack her over the head with that broken field hockey stick, thereby killing her for real?

Of course, there’s also the possibility that whoever killed her just didn’t do a proper job before burying her. After trying to dig her way out, she failed, choking on the dirt and eventually dying in the same place she was buried.

It’s just a theory, but remember: Anything is possible in Rosewood!
