Did a recent slip of the tongue from Pretty Little Liars showrunner Marlene King accidentally reveal that the new "A" is a girl?

In an interview with TVFanatic, Marlene discusses her motivation for giving Ezra (Ian Harding) the Maggie storyline. She says, “‘A’ can only torture you once you have a secret so we will definitely find out more of that storyline and she might start taking advantage of it, too.”

Did Marlene just eliminate half the suspect pool for the “A” team leader by letting it slip that “A” is a girl … again?

Fans will remember that, in the weeks leading up to the Season 2 finale (Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked”), Marlene referred to “A” as “her” in an interview. As we found out, of course, “A” was Mona (Janel Parrish).

To be fair, “A” has a much broader identity this time around. As we prepare for tonight’s Season 3 summer finale (Season 3, Episode 12: “The Lady Killer”, airing August 28), we know from this sneak peek that Mona will be taking orders from someone, presumably on the “A” team. There will be two people wearing black hoodies, and we hope that whoever is controlling Mona will be revealed as the “A” team leader.

This interview suggests that several Rosewood suspects are in the clear: Ezra, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), Toby (Keegan Allen), Nate, Jason (Drew Van Acker), Noel (Brant Daugherty), Wren (Julian Morris), Garrett (Yani Gellman), Lucas (Brendan Robinson), and the other male members of the suspect pool.

Of course, Marlene could just be referring to "A" as "she" because the one "A" we know about, Mona, is female. But does that mean Mona will start acting out in earnest again?
