Just one more day, and we’ll finally get to return to Rosewood for the hotly anticipated third season of Pretty Little Liars. Will life be a picnic now that Mona’s in the nuthouse and it’s senior year for our foursome? Absolutely not. New dangers are lurking and Troian Bellisario (Spencer) says that the new episodes go “deeper and darker” than ever before.
On a recent set visit we caught up with Troian to get the scoop on the season’s new and returning characters, the future of Spoby and the “Wren Factor”.
What spoilers can you give us about new season?
In true PLL fashion not many, but I can let you know that I’m very proud and excited for this season. I feel now that we’ve gone to the length of exposing “A”, the show is going into new territory. We’re definitely going deeper and darker into how twisted Rosewood is as a community, not just individuals. They aren’t shying away from edgy things. We’ve always tried to push the envelope with this show, but in our third season they feel capable of going so much deeper.
Now that Mona was revealed as “A,” how closely will rest of season follow the books?
Well it’s interesting because our series has always borrowed from the books and has taken major plot points like Mona being “A,” but completely out of context. If they had followed it strictly to the book I wouldn’t be with Toby and Toby wouldn’t even be around. Thank goodness for that! There will definitely be things borrowed from the books, but we don’t know when they are going to happen and we don’t know how and which characters. Oftentimes things now are being switched around. So you can expect to have some of your favorite plot lines pop up if you’re fans of the book.
How about new characters?
All of that is very exciting. I’m very good friends with a lot of people who are getting to be characters on the show, completely as a surprise for me. One of my best friends Shane Coffey is playing Holden and I’m really excited to see him return. He’s bringing an odd story with him this year. My very good friend Vanessa Ray just got cast as someone who has long, blonde, locks and definitely scares the bejeezus out of the girls, I’m very excited to have her on the show.
Will Toby and Spencer’s relationship last and be happy?
Oh yeah, no they are super happy and have no problems. I think from now on everything in Rosewood will be fine [laughs]. No — if we didn’t have drama on the show and drama between characters, there wouldn’t be a show. So I think the coolest part about Toby and Spencer’s relationship is that now that it’s out in the open and they don’t have the world, “A,” or Spencer’s parents trying to tear them apart they can actually finally be with each other. But what that reveals is how they are going to tear themselves apart from the inside. Spencer is still hyper-controlling, Toby still has a heart of gold that can be hurt really easily, so now it’s all about, “Can they survive each other?” I think they love each other a lot, but as I’m sure most of you know from relationships in your life, you can love somebody to death and it still cannot work out.
Does Wren factor into Spencer’s life?
I hate to compare it to something like this because it’s not as serious, but have you met that person you have an unbelievable chemical attraction with but everything in your mind and moral system tells you it’s wrong? Whenever he comes in he’s kryptonite for her, he’s this opium cloud. She has that effect on him too. I think as long as they stay away from each other they are going to be okay. He works in Rosewood, I think you’re going to find he kicks up new trouble this season and not necessarily with Spencer.
Is it safe to say Emily had the hardest summer?
I would say definitely because she was dealing with a real loss. We were all frightened to move on, but excited and relieved to move on. They are ready to be normal and experience the life that has been stolen from them from years from “A.”
How do the girls help out Emily?
I really love Tumblr and there was this very funny post, which showed a picture of Emily and it said, “That awkward moment when you find out that everyone you ever love dies.” It’s true! What more does she have to go through? Her first love was taken from her and now her true love was completely ripped from her life. I think the girls, because they are her family, will always be there for her, and maybe they cannot fill that hole because who ever could, but she will never be lacking for support or love.
