The best part about Pretty Little Liars is seeing the girls hook up with people who are just plain wrong for them! This was an especially scandalicious week of date-swapping, secret trysts and longing glances. To help keep track of all the on-again-off-again couples, we’re providing a rundown of which couples are headed to homecoming, and which are steering toward The Hurt Locker.
EMILY AND TOBY
How we last left them: After being matched as lab partners, these outsiders share a sweet, if smelly, moment of understanding while taking out the trash. (He knows about the Maya photos!) Speaking of our favorite crush, it seems the girl next door’s temporarily out of the picture as Emily focuses her attention on her neighborhood creeper, Toby.
What happened this week: This fairly odd couple bonds over green goo and shared love of really cool, unknown bands. What nerdy pair of non-conformists weren’t drawn together over unknown music? Despite standing Toby up for their coffee date, Em redeemed herself at the last moment with a semi-girly mix CD.
Where it’s headed: We’re holding our breath to see who Toby will take to homecoming. It seems like everybody wants a piece of Emily these days. Which way will she ruin her reputation — with the lesbian next door, or with the accused arsonist down the block?
ARIA AND EZRA
How we last left them:
Aria flips out after Ezra gives her advice about her family and Byron’s infidelity. Several makeout sessions into their own illicit relationship, Ezra and Aria both realize they don’t actually know that much about each other and opt for another late-night hang at his apartment.
What happened this week:
Finally! Someone finally pointed out to Ezra that this is getting a little creepy. Despite their “if it feels good, do it” scene, things cooled down considerably as the real world intruded on their love nest. After Ezra found a text from “A” on Aria’s phone and blew up (wow, this guy has a short fuse!), it appears they’ve reached an impasse over their May-September dalliance.
Where it’s headed: Ezra seems to be coming to his senses and trying to stay out of prison. While it makes for exciting sexual tension, we doubt this pair will ever be able to completely resist each other.
HANNA AND SEAN
How we last left them: Hanna crashed Sean’s car into a tree after he chose foosball over sleeping with her. How does a girl compete with those spinning little guys?
What happened this week: After running into Sean while carrying some unfortunate orthopedic shoes, Hanna then gets left in the dust as he speeds away with some skinny cheerleader. The ep ends on a high note, though, because celibate Sean wouldn’t want to go to the dance with anyone but her! Aww!
Where it’s headed: At least Hanna doesn’t have to worry about Sean sleeping with the skinny latte girl, but we’re not sure going to virginity club is what’s going to keep her man interested. Of all the PLL couples, we’re expecting this one to fizzle the fastest.
SPENCER AND WREN AND ALEX
How we last left them: After escorting an intoxicated Wren home, Spencer has an impromptu front-porch makeout with him before fleeing to Hanna’s car. Get thee to a nunnery, go! Always beware of prose-spouting Britons...
What happened this week: No sign of Wren except that Mr. Hastings refuses to speak to him. However, Spence spotted some new (age-appropriate) eye-candy shucking balls at the tennis court. Profound insights about serving and returning were exchanged by the apparently witty ball boy and the brainiac.
Where it’s headed: We have high hopes for Spencer and Alex’s future hangout and hope to see some magic at homecoming. For this episode, we envision a reverse of Cinderella — the princess brings the ball-boy to the ball.
