Okay, so we now know who “A” is, but the mystery on Pretty Little Liars is far from over. Mona (Janel Parrish) may have been stalking the girls, but it appears that someone was telling her what to do. Don’t worry — we’ve got our crack team of sleuths on the case, picking up clues about this evil mastermind. Here are some hints from Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked,” that may help us find out who’s really calling the shots!
Suspect #1: Melissa Hastings
Why she might be: The show seems to be telling us that there’s a link between Mona and Melissa (Torrey DeVitto), once Mona uses the word “toffee,” which makes us think that maybe Melissa visited Mona at the end. It’s now clear that Melissa knew about the “Jenna thing,” and the fact that Melissa was spotted at Maya’s murder scene makes it seem that maybe she was the one who killed Maya, perhaps using a weapon that Jenna (Tammin Sursok) may have given her in the park. And here we thought that the worst thing Melissa would do this week was to steal Aria’s (Lucy Hale) frozen yogurt.
Why she might not be: The Black Swan definitely looks like Melissa, but the fact that Spencer (Troian Bellisario) tells us that Melissa once dressed as a Black Swan makes it seem too obvious for it to actually be Melissa. Plus, the Black Swan didn’t appear pregnant, although there’s always the possibility that Melissa herself is no longer pregnant or was faking it. Plus, there are many other people who share the Black Swan’s physical attributes, like perhaps Danielle (Lucas’ girlfriend from the yearbook), or Hanna’s stepsis Kate (with dyed hair), or even Ashley Marin (Laura Leighton) (who might be assuming the role for good instead of evil). Who knew that a bird outfit could cause so much drama?
Suspect #2: Alison Dilaurentis’ twin
Why she might be: We don’t yet know for sure that Alison (Sasha Pieterse) has a twin on the show, but all signs indicate as much, given those dual pics of Ali on the wall of her room in Season 2, Episode 13:”The First Secret.” We’re thinking it would make sense that Ali’s twin could have been angry at Ali years ago, and so now she’s controlling Mona, meaning that she may have been the one in red who visited Mona. And if Ali’s twin is anything like Ali, we know she likes to be in charge.
Why she might not be: Well, we don’t know for sure that she even exists yet. Still, if it turns out that Ali does indeed have a twin, we’re guessing that she and Ali won’t be quite as tight as the Olsen twins.
Suspect #3: Jenna Marshall
Why she might be: That scene in the park where Jenna (sans sunglasses) hands something to a mystery person is very suspicious. It makes Jenna seem very in-control, and it also makes us wonder if perhaps Jenna is handing a gun over to the person who ended up killing Maya (Bianca Lawson). We’re thinking that Maya’s death could be connected to “A,” if maybe Maya was invited to join Mona’s group by that person in the dark car but then declined the invite. Either way, it seems clear that Jenna is not one to forgive and forget what the Liars did to her.
Why she might not be: Mona has made it clear that she hates Jenna’s guts, which would make it unlikely that they would work together, but maybe that was all an act. And Jenna’s scene in Season 2, Episode 24: “If These Dolls Could Talk,” where she gets emotional and tells the girls that there is someone besides her whom the girls should fear, makes it seem that Jenna isn’t controlling Mona. Then again, the word “liar” is in the name of this show, so we shouldn’t be shocked when someone isn’t telling the truth.
Suspect #4: Jackie Molina
Why she might be: Jackie has been absent from the show for quite some time, but we doubt she’d be that easy to get rid of. She definitely fits the physical characteristics of the black swan, with her thin face and dark hair, and it would make sense that Jackie would want to stir up trouble at the dance where Aria and Ezra (Ian Harding) appear to rekindle their romance. Look, we understand why it would be hard to move on after dating Ezra, but Jackie needs to take a hint.
Why she might not be: Did Jackie even know Ali, let alone the other girls? It doesn’t seem that way, meaning she wouldn’t really have a clear motive for telling Mona what to do. Of course, since there is an “A” group, it’s possible that each member of the group is focusing on one of the Liars. Still, right now, Jackie is just a crazy bee-yotch, and on this show, that’s nothing special.
