UPDATE: On October 4, 2012, ABC Family announced that PLL has been officially renewed for Season 4. This article was written before the announcement.
As Pretty Little Liars showrunner Marlene King recently tweeted, plans for the Season 3 winter finale are already underway. Is it safe to assume that Season 4 is a sure thing?
ABC Family hasn’t officially renewed PLL for a fourth season yet, but that's mostly because it’s a little too early in the season for renewals. Based on ratings alone, PLL continues to soar, especially among advertiser-friendly 18-34 year-old women, where Season 3 averaged a 2.8 rating. On average, Season 3 had an audience of 3 million viewers per episode, according to Zap2It.
While it seems like a no-brainer to renew (and in all likelihood, ABC Family definitely will), some of the cast and crew have hinted that Season 4 could be the final season. Back in 2011, executive producer Oliver Goldstick told The Hollywood Reporter, “Maybe some series aren’t meant to go beyond four seasons … This could be a four-season show.”
And earlier this year, Ashley Benson (Hanna) told Teen Vogue that producers were talking about ending PLL after four seasons and making a feature film.
Whether or not PLL Season 4 will be the final season, we would bet that Season 4 is going to happen. So don’t fret just yet!
Don’t miss the next new episode of PLL, the Halloween special, on Tuesday, October 23 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
