Big Brother Producers: It’s “Challenging” to Find Huge Twists Each Year

With Big Brother entering its sixteenth season this summer, it’s becoming harder and harder to keep coming up with shocking twists that will make the game exciting enough for the competitors as well as the viewers. For producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan — the brains behind Big Brother — it’s something that takes a lot of thought each and every year.

“It gets challenging as the years go by, but we’re always looking for ways to throw a major curveball at the houseguests,” Rich Meehan tells veteran Big Brother player Jeff Schroeder in a video for

After nearly a decade of producing the show, we suspect things could get pretty tricky for this creative duo. Coming up with devices like Pandora’s Box, The Saboteur, and Double Evictions, there’s been a lot of pressure to keep thinking up twists and turns each season.

“You have to throw a curveball at the houseguests now,” Allison Grodner chimed in. “Now that we’re in our sixteenth season, you can’t come in expecting to know how to play this game. Some years it comes to us immediately, sometimes it’s something we’ve been wanting to do for awhile and now’s the time, or sometimes it’s something that takes a long, long time. When you’re throwing out one idea after another … until you hit upon something that we really feel is fresh and different and will twist up the season just enough.”

There’s still no word on what the big twist will be for Big Brother 16, but we think it’s safe to say that viewers should still “expect the unexpected.” You know the drill.

What do you hope the twist is for this season? Hit the comments and sound off!

Big Brother 16 airs June 25 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
