New American Idol Producers Vow to ‘Freshen Things Up’

It's no breaking news that American Idol is suffering. After a decade on top, the Fox singing competition show has steadily began to decline, and execs are doing everything in their power to keep the show going.

This included firing executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick after ratings for Season 12 fell more than 30 percent from Season 11. The new blood Fox brought in to help the show out are Jesse Ignjatovic and Evan Prager, who run a production company called Den of Thieves, who have produced VH1's Diva special, CMT Music Awards, and the past seven years of MTV Video Music Awards shows.

So what changes are down the pipeline for Idol? "If anything, it's trying to make the right changes ... to freshen things up," Evan said. "The challenge is finding what can be tweaked a little but leaving things that work well in place." And when it comes to the judging panel, mum's the word. "Chemistry and the desire to find and make that next great superstar."

When asked what the show is doing right — despite massive ratings drops — Evan and Jesse said the roles of judges, as a source of guidance, and America, who actually votes to crown the winner, works for the show and delivers the ultimate star power other singing competition shows just can't bring.

Both seem to be reluctant to make huge changes, noting that the bare bones work. If last season proved anything, it's that they should at least ensure that the judges don't outshine the contestants — paging Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey!

It's too bad the theoretical all-alumni panel idea isn't working out, because Jesse and Evan have wonderful taste in past contestants. Both Jesse and Evan praised Adam Lambert, while Evan also pointed out that Carrie Underwood was a superstar. OK, guys, make them be judges!
