For all of Olivia Pope’s life (and in turn, the past few years of Scandal viewers’ lives), she’s thought her mother, Maya, was dead. She thought wrong.
As revealed in the shocking last moments of Season 3, Episode 7: “Everything’s Coming Up Mellie,” we discovered that Mama Pope is alive and not-so-well, having been hidden away in a super-secure jail cell. Not surprisingly, Olivia’s father Rowan knew she was there — and likely put her there after getting her off the plane 20 years ago — and he paid her a visit to say, “Our daughter’s been asking about you.”
In the promo for next week’s episode (Season 3, Episode 8: “Vermont Is For Lovers, Too”), we see a bit of the aftermath — just not Olivia’s reaction. (Except for as she delivers some news to Fitz: “There was a plane that went down. One of the bodies was my mother.”)
“That's Olivia, your daughter,” Rowan tells Maya from what looks like a hospital bed, with oxygen hooked up to her. “She’s beautiful,” Maya responds.
But it doesn’t stop there. As the promo says, there’s one thing that can change everything.
“I want to see my daughter and I want you to make it happen,” Maya demands. Get ready to meet your ghost of a mother, Olivia Pope!

“Olivia and the team try to handle both uncovering the truth behind Operation Remington, while also managing a potential crisis with the Josie Marcus campaign. Meanwhile, Quinn falls further down the rabbit hole with Charlie, and Cyrus creates a plan to take down Sally, but doesn’t think of the possible harm he could inflict on himself.”
