Family Protests Local Restaurant Over Stroller Ban, May Plan to Sue

Jason Desroches, his wife Andrea Chilcott, and their 16-year-old daughter were planning a peaceful breakfast at Flips restaurant in Brampton near Toronto, Canada, when they were abruptly turned away because of their stroller.

“We showed up at 7:30 a.m. on a weekday and there was no lineup,”Jason said. “We asked to speak to the manager. She said their insurance doesn’t allow for strollers.”

The local eatery, which has been in business for 17 years, said they denied the family service because of their limited insurance policy — the same reason they prohibit skateboards and roller skates in the establishment. They do allow wheelchairs and Seeing Eye dogs “because that’s common sense,” says Bill, the manager at Flips.

“Our place is extremely small,” he said. “We’re fair. We’ve had people on rollerblades come in here, falling down on tables and next thing you know, lawsuits. We don’t have anyone ever make a big stink (over the rules).”

Jason and his wife just don’t see the problem. “There’s no sign when you walk in,” Jason said. “There’s nothing unusual about family restaurants letting strollers in. We’ve gone everywhere with strollers. I’ve completely boycotted the place.”

In addition to boycotting, Jason says he has about 50 friends with kids in strollers who plan on performing a peaceful protest at Flips soon. He plans of each person with a stroller being turned down by the establishment one after another, and then hanging out in front of Flips to make a clear statement. He is also considering a lawsuit.

“We can refuse any patrons, “Bill recalled from a discussion with his lawyer, “for any reason whatsoever. It’s not a public place.”
