Grey’s Anatomy’s Patrick Dempsey: Racing Career “Becoming More Full-Time”

He's locked in for Seasons 11 and 12 of Grey's Anatomy — Season 12 being all-but-confirmed for this ABC favorite — but don't expect Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) to be taking many more acting roles after that.

The 48-year-old we fans know as McDreamy has been racing cars for years now, and it has gone from hobby to career — and soon it may be his only career.

"This is becoming more full-time than it is part-time," Patrick told the Los Angeles Times on July 25 — just before taking to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in his Porsche 911. "[Racing] is becoming all-consuming. It's my real passion."

As dedicated fans of his know, Patrick is the co-founder of and a driver for Dempsey Racing — and he says he has competed in close to 90 races so far.

So how does he pursue this new passion of his while still reporting for duty at the Grey's soundstage? Patrick says that his contract has a provision that allows him to race.

So, much as we hate to say it, he might be on-screen less in Season 11, meaning next year might be a little less Dreamy. And we're not optimistic about him starring in Enchanted 2 either…
