Randy Jackson Weighs in on Season 13 Contestants — Hear His Tough Critiques! (VIDEO)

While we totally respect the American Idol Season 13 judges’ expertise — particularly Harry Connick Jr.’s expertise in being adorable — there are judges who have spent far more time sipping their Coke and calling the shots than Harry, J.Lo, and Keith Urban. One of the most notable: Randy Jackson, who’s returned this season as a mentor to the contestants.

Now, Randy’s weighing in on what he really thinks about each contestant after having worked with them, and, as usual, we can count on him to be brutally honest.

So what does Randy have to say? Out of the Top 9, there were few contestants who he didn’t think had a lot of work to do. Jena Irene is one to watch, according to Randy — duh. And Dexter Roberts, as the “quintessential country guy,” shouldn’t change a thing.

And while J.Lo, Keith, and Harry think Caleb Johnson can do no wrong, Randy would like to see him stretch his musical wings a little bit. “He’s just got to pick the songs better, and also show differences in what he can do,” Randy says. “Have some tender moments, not just loud moments.”

The man’s got a point. Caleb’s kind of a one trick pony and although his one trick works pretty darn well, we’d love to see what else Caleb can do.

Randy’s harshest criticism was directed at Jess Meuse, who Randy is convinced is having some serious trouble choosing songs that work well with her unique voice.

“She’s got to pick the best, the right song for her voice,” Randy says. “What’s the right song? The one that you can sing the best!”

Ouch! Rough to hear, but true. We hope the contestants will take Randy’s advice to heart!

Do you think Randy’s critiques are too tough, or are they spot on?
