The Walking Dead Ratings: AMC Hit Still Reigns Supreme in Key Demo

Update (3/11/2013): Resurrection may have won the night in total viewers (with 13.3 million) but The Walking Dead still reigned supreme in the crucial 18-49 demo garnering an impressive 8 million watchers more than double Resurrection's 3.6 million viewers in the same demo. Season 4, Episode 13: "Alone" was watched by some 12.7 million total viewers, marking a slight increase over the March 2 installment, which earned 12.6 million total viewers.

The March 9 episode of Talking Dead featuring Lauren Cohan and Sonequa Martin-Green was watched by 4.6 million viewers.

The Walking Dead
seems to have some stiff ratings competition in the back half of Season 4, and ironically the show that beat TWD in total viewership (though not in the 18-49 demo) on March 9, making it the top drama for the night, is all about bringing people back to life. Uh, say what?

According to Deadline, the series premiere of the ABC drama Resurrection, which bowed at 9 p.m. ET on March 9, won the night in total viewers. As the site points out, this is actually the second week in a row that ABC has stolen AMC’s Sunday night ratings thunder. Last Sunday the network’s broadcast of The 86th Annual Academy Awards won the night, although that was an expected coup. Resurrection's win, on the other hand, comes as a bit of a surprise.

While Deadline doesn’t haven’t specific numbers for TWD just yet, they do know that Resurrection took the cable ratings cake with 13.3 million total viewers and an impressive 3.6 rating in the 18-49 bracket. The drama about bring bringing people back to life years after they’ve passed was ABC’s highest rated midseason drama launch in two years and the most-watched program of the night, beating out TWD and Fox’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, among other programs.

AMC’s ratings usually take a bit longer to come in so it’s still possible TWD had a good night with Season 4, Episode 13: “Alone”, but we’re still surprised that Resurrection claimed the top spot, especially after TWD easily bested the Sochi Winter Olympics for three weeks in a row last month.

Are you surprised that newbie Resurrection bested TWD? Tell us your thoughts and theories below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
