The Originals Ratings Return Down — But Here’s Why It Will Be Renewed For Season 2
The Originals returned to its Tuesday night timeslot this week with one of its best episodes to date, Season 1, Episode 10 (“The Casket Girls”). However, it looks like a few fang fans missed the memo. The ratings for the winter premiere were down slightly from Episode 9, with a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo.
But don’t worry, Originals fans. It’s still one of the most highly rated shows on the CW. If the freshman series keeps its ratings steady (and we don’t foresee a free-fall in its future), then we see no reason why the network wouldn’t renew it for a second season. During Wednesday’s CW presentation at the 2014 TCAs, network president Mark Pedowitz told reporters he's optimistic about a renewal for The Originals as well as freshman series Reign and veteran Supernatural.
Back in November, Pedowitz told The Wrap, “‘Originals’ has performed quite well in comparison to how ‘The Vampire Diaries’ was. I believe over time it’ll be a stellar performer.” If the president of the network thinks it will be a “stellar performer” over time, then that means they’ve already considered its longevity.
At this point, The Originals is definitely heading toward a second season renewal, so rest easy, fang fans. Klaus and Co. will most likely be back next season with even more supernatural drama in the bayou — and if we’re really lucky, even more opportunities for another Vampire Diaries crossover! (Yes, we’re looking at you, Caroline Forbes.)
What do you think, Originals fans? Are you excited the TVD spin-off is a ratings success? Sound off in the comments!
