Duck Dynasty’s Ratings Dip Even Lower in Second Episode — Can They Recover From the Scandal?

Perhaps we spoke too soon. After the premiere of the fifth season of Duck Dynasty, we told you that all seemed to be well in the Louisiana swamp land — at least where the A&E reality show’s ratings were concerned. But following the series’ second week, things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse.

The second week is showing signs, yet again, of audience falloff — which many are attributing to the controversy surrounding show star (and family patriarch) Phil Robertson’s anti-gay remarks last month. The second episode last week was down to 6.6 million viewers from the 8.5 million that watched the family’s antics in the second ep of Season 4 last summer.

While ratings were down at for the premiere two weeks back (bringing in 8.5 million versus last season’s 11.7 million premiere), we wrote this off as a natural dip due to summer versus winter television competition — particularly since numbers were flat from the fall finale, prior to the scandal. However, this second week is not a good sign. The 6.55 million audience is actually the lowest audience the show has seen since way back in December 2012.

We can imagine none of this is sitting too well with A&E, though the network can appease itself with the knowledge that Duck Dynasty is still a major cable powerhouse. Their total viewers and their 18-49 demographic ratings are still far and beyond most everything else on cable. But if the show continues to trend downward, that won’t stay the case for too long.

So what do you think — can the show overcome it’s bad press and regain viewers? Are you still watching? Tell us in the comments below.
