Game of Thrones Ratings: Red Wedding Holds Steady, Just Shy of Record-Breaking
Despite the fact the Red Wedding left us emotionally scarred for life, it was one of the finest hours the HBO series has ever produced. So how did the hyped Game of Thrones episode fare in the ratings?
Well, it wasn’t Game of Thrones highest rated episode, but it came pretty close. Season 3, Episode 9: “The Rains of Castamere” scored 5.2 million viewers, down slightly from the show’s all-time high set earlier this season of 5.5 million. Fans shouldn’t be too upset about these numbers. Considering the series was fresh off a one-week break for Memorial Day weekend -- and that most fans of the TV show had no idea the episode was going to be a bloodbath -- these numbers seem reasonable. We suspect Game of Thrones will shatter these ratings this week with the Season 3 finale.
Don’t worry, Thrones fans: According to Vulture, GoT will end its third season Sunday as the most popular series on HBO since the fifth season of The Sopranos. And given Game of Thrones Season 3’s 30 percent increase over last season, we have a feeling Daenerys and her dragons are well on their way to surpassing Tony Soprano.
