Game of Thrones Ratings: Season 4 Finishes Strong (VIDEO)

Game of Thrones’ fourth season was a monstrous one in the ratings for the HBO fantasy epic, and it didn’t slow down for its epic finale.

According to HBO, GoT’s Season 4 finale, “The Children,” brought in 7.1 million viewers in its initial airing, an increase of 32 percent over last season’s closer. The episode’s gross audience including repeat viewings Sunday night was 9.3 million, an impressive number by any measure for a premium cable show.

GoT finishes Season 4 with an average of 18.6 million gross weekly viewers, further padding its record of HBO’s most-watched show ever after surpassing The Sopranos 18 million and change earlier this season. The show also averaged 6.8 million viewers during the season for its initial Sunday 9 pm airings, which is a full 37 percent higher than its average in Season 3.

It will be interesting to see if GoT is able to maintain its momentum in Season 5. After the events of the finale, some fan-favorites are now either dead or separated from their well-liked storylines, and it’s possible viewers may not enjoy the show’s new direction as much.

Furthermore, the show will likely face issues trying to accurately adapt A Song of Ice and Fire moving forward, since the story from here on out introduces a number of new characters and story threads that will almost certainly be cut or heavily altered for television, and a decrease in quality could be a real concern. We have faith in the showrunners, though, and are excited for more records to fall in Season 5!
