The Vampire Diaries Ratings Drop With Season 5, Episode 21

Last night’s heartbreaking episode of The Vampire DiariesSeason 5, Episode 21 (“Promised Land”) saw the death of one major character and set up what is sure to be an epic Season 5 finale. With ratings on a decline the past few weeks, we were shocked that there was no improvement — especially since this was the penultimate episode of the season. Read on to see how low the ratings were!

According to preliminary numbers from Zap2it, only 1.6 million viewers tuned in to see Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) get his heart ripped out in the final moments. With those numbers, the episode only earned a 0.7 in the key 18-48 demo, down from last week’s 0.8 rating after final adjustments were made. The show lost viewers week-over-week, according to the first reported numbers, dropping from 1.82 million to the 1.6 million.

While this isn’t exactly good news, there’s no need to worry because the show has already been renewed for a sixth season. With Stefan’s death being Friday’s most buzzed about TV moment, we expect DVR numbers to help give the episode a boost. Plus, with many fans wanting to find out if he’ll make it out of the Other Side, you can (hopefully) expect big numbers for next week’s finale!

Are you surprised that the ratings were so low given Stefan’s death? Hit the comments and sound off!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
