The Vampire Diaries Ratings: Season 5 Premiere Down Over Last Year

Bad news, Vampire Diaries fans. The ratings for the Season 5 premiere (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”) are in — and we wish they were better.

Overall, over 2.5 million of you tuned in to watch Silas wreak havoc on Mystic Falls, giving TVD a 1.2 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo. However, compared to last season’s nail-biting premiere, the ratings for the Season 5 opener were down 25 percent. Even worse, this means “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was TVD’s lowest-rated premiere ever.

Now, it isn’t all bad news, TVD fans! Compared to previous finales, the Season 4 finale (“Graduation”) didn’t really end on a huge cliffhanger (i.e. Elena turning into a vampire in the Season 3 finale). So this could explain the drop.

We wouldn’t worry too much about TVD. It’s still the CW’s highest rated series, so it’s going to take more than a 25 percent drop in the ratings for the network to consider canceling it (which will never happen). But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t rally for our favorite supernatural series!

Come on, TVD fans! Let’s show the cast and crew that this was just a fluke and tune in to watch Season 5, Episode 2 (“True Lies”).

Are you surprised by the premiere ratings? Or did you think the premiere was kind of boring? Sound off in the comments!

Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW, followed by the series premiere of Reign.
