Raven-Symoné’s Controversial Quotes: Michelle Obama, the N-Word, Watermelondrea, and More

ABC loves Raven-Symoné, praising the embattled co-host of The View as “confident, genuine, and opinionated” — but maybe what the network actually loves is the ratings the 29-year-old brings in thanks to her polarizing viewpoints.

The former child star is the target of a new Change.org petition demanding her dismissal from the talk show after her latest rant.

But let’s not allow this particular incident to overshadow all the other times she’s angered fans with her off-the-cuff opinions.

NEWS: Raven-Symoné Almost Apologizes For Discriminatory Comments

Here’s a comprehensive history of Raven’s controversial quotes:

“I want to be labeled a human who loves humans, [and] I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American. I’m an American … I’m an American. And that is a colorless person.” – Raven-Symoné on Oprah: Where Are They Now? on October 5, 2014.

“We don’t look at it as racism as the way your generation does … We’re trying to move forward.” – Raven-Symoné on The View in March 2015, discussing the n-word.

“Was he saying it racist-like? Because he said that he voted for her later, and I don’t think he was saying it racist … Some people look like animals. Is that true? ... I look like a bird. Can I be mad if somebody calls me Toucan Sam?” – Raven-Symoné on The View on March 17, 2015, discussing Univision host Rodner Figueroa’s comments that Michelle Obama looks like a Planet of the Apes cast member.

“I never said I wasn’t Black. I said I wasn’t African-American. And to me, that’s a difference. Thank you to Ancestry.com, actually, for sending me my DNA test … I am from every continent in Africa, except for one. And I am from every continent in Europe, except for one … And for the last 400 years, my family has been living in Virginia. How long do you have to be in one country before you’re that?” – Raven-Symoné on E! News on March 19, 2015, perhaps forgetting some basics about geography and history.

“I am very discriminatory against words like the ones that they were saying in the video. I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea. It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.” Raven-Symoné on The View on October 8, 2015, discussing a UCLA study about biases toward stereotypically black names.

NEWS: Raven-Symoné Says She Was Shamed For Not Being Big Enough

“The girl was told multiple times to get off the phone. There’s no right or reason for him to be doing this type of harm — that’s ridiculous — but at the same time, you gotta follow the rules in school. First of all, why are there cellphones in school? This shouldn’t even be a problem to begin with, and he shouldn’t have been acting like that on top of it.” – Raven-Symoné on After the View on October 27, 2015, seemingly victim-blaming the student a school resource officer threw to the ground at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina.

Honorable mention: “Do you guys have protected or unprotected sex?” – Raven-Symoné on The View on October 2, 2015, prying into the sex life of HIV-positive child star Danny Pintauro and his husband.
