R&B Divas LA: Who Is Kelly Price? 5 Things You Should Know

R&B Divas L.A. premiered this past summer to an audience awaiting to relive their ‘90s R&B fix with the likes of the EnVogue’s Dawn Robinson, City High’s Claudette Ortiz, Chanté Moore, Lil’ Mo, and Kelly Price.

While Kelly may have come off as the “mean girl” in the group, there really is much more to her than what meets the surface. Here’s five things you should know about Kelly Price.

1. Kelly was discovered by Mariah Carey

Kelly Price was discovered by Mariah Carey when the pop diva walked in on Kelly when she was practicing for a singing engagement with George Michael at Madison Square Garden. Mimi, who was running late for her own Grammy rehearsal, liked what she heard and in-turn introduced Kelly to her husband (at the time), Sony Columbia CEO Tommy Mottola.

Since that fateful moment, Kelly went on to sing backup for MC, in addition to providing backing vocals for Faith Evans, R. Kelly, and Notorious B.I.G. and Puffy’s “Mo Money Mo Problem,” before finally branching off into a solo career (which Kelly said Mariah wasn’t too happy about…).

2. Kelly was the victim of traumatizing abuse

During the climatic R&B Divas LA reunion show, Kelly revealed the harsh truth that she was molested at the age of 3 by a family member. The abuse would be the subject of her monologue in the theater production Not Your Mama’s Monologues, with Divas castmate Dawn Robinson.

3. Kelly helped Tyler Perry with his movie, Why Did I Get Married?

It’s no secret that Kelly Price is a talented woman when it comes to singing and songwriting, but it turns out that Kelly also had a hand in the production of Tyler Perry’s movie adaption of Why Did I Get Married? Kelly’s song “Why,” which she recorded for the song’s soundtrack, was the basis for the for character Sheila, played by singer-actress Jill Scott, and both she and Tyler worked together to create the backstory for the character. Who knew?!

4. Kelly is a breast cancer activist

In addition to being multi-talented Kelly is also very generous and is an active participant in the fight against Breast Cancer. Kelly’s mom and mother-in-law were both diagnosed with the disease in 1998, and in 2000, Kelly donated a quarter of a million dollars to Breast Cancer research. Kelly also donated the proceeds from her single "Love Sets You Free” and has volunteered to showcase her fashions at charity galas for Breast Cancer awareness.

5. Kelly is a family woman

Some people don’t know, but Kelly Price is actually a family woman. This R&B singer is wife to her husband/manager, Jeffrey Rolle, and the pair have two children, Jonia Rolle and Jeffrey Rolle Jr.

We’re not sure if R&B Divas LA will be returning for a second season (due to Kelly’s “feud” with Chanté and Lil’ Mo), but we sure hope the divas come back — if only to grace us with their voices!
