By now you must know about the gag-worthy beef between Love & Hip Hop Atlanta star K. Michelle and singer Tamar Braxton. These ladies have been slinging old lace-front wigs at each other left and right, but the sad part about it is that it all started (according to Tamar) as a misunderstanding on Twitter. It’s been over a year, and the beef is still cooking (no pun intended). So, how did it all start? Let’s take a look back at how K. Michelle and Tamar’s rivalry began.
June 2012: Twittergate
K. Michelle drops a bombshell on the premiere of Love & Hip Hop Season 2, stating that she was in an abusive relationship with former manager, Mickey “Mephitz” Wright. Memphitz, is currently married to Lil’ Wayne’s ex-wife, Toya Wright (neé Carter), who immediately jumped to her husband’s defense once the story hit the airwaves. Things only got worse as K. Michelle rehashed her “abuse” story on various radio shows, prompting Toya to come to her husband’s defense.
Tamar Braxton, who is a close friend of Toya’s, tweeted something along of the lines “let her tell her fairytale.” K. responded by saying, “I like Toni better anyway,” and that, ladies and gentlemen, is when the feud began.
June 2012: Muppets ‘R’ Us
K. Michelle sat down for an interview on TT Torez’s radio show and said that people from Memphis “jump gates” and outright called Tamar a muppet that should mind her own business.Ouch! Tamar, not one to let anyone take shots at her, fired back with a cease and desist letter from her lawyers.
July 2012: “Paper Don’t Scare Me”
After receiving Tamar’s cease and desist, K. Michelle asserted that she didn’t care about Tay-Tay’s claims of being bullied. In fact, K. posted a video of the Fraggle Rock opening sequence with the caption “cease and desist this.”
In an interview with K Empire, K. Michelle said “I’m from Memphis and a piece of paper don’t scare me. I wish her the best in whatever. You can send letters or do whatever you need to do. I don’t care,” adding “I’m not that type of artist. I’m a person first. You come for me, I’m gonna pop off on you. I don’t fight all battles, but I feel like if you’re on a platform certain things you shouldn’t say unless you know something about [it].”
August 2012: Tamar Responds
Sometime in August, it’s reported that Tamar may have sent several tweets to K. Michelle after watching an episode of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. Apparently the reality TV star/singer called out K. Michelle for being fraudulent to her fans about ending the feud, and not letting them know about the apology LHHATL producer, Mona Scott Young, “told” Tamar that the "V.S.O.P" singer would give her.
September 2012: “Miss Piggy”
K. Michelle makes remarks about Tamar when asked about the feud during an interview with Madame Noire. In the short clip, K. said that she was over their feud and "wished ‘Miss Piggy’ all the best."
August 2013: Lost Wigs
Between September of last year and August of this year, the ladies’ feud appeared to have calmed down. Between Tamar and K. Michelle both working on their respective albums (as well as Tamar having her son, Logan, with hubby Vincent Herbert), the ladies were preoccupied. That is until K. Michelle’s August 13 appearance on 106 and Park to promote her new album. Later that same day, Tamar tweeted “Damn I lost my wig!!!......” followed by “#shadebutnoshade ;)”
Tamar is pretty known for the blonde wig she sports both on-screen and in-person, so when K. Michelle rocked a similar look, Tay-Tay felt the need to comment.
K. Michelle, who is ever quick with the comebacks, tweeted a barrage of quips for the Love and War singer, including “Rebel against muppets gone wild! No shade. Rebel against lip synching and buying ur own singles. Noshade,” and “You didn’t lose your wig, Kermit snatched it #Realtalkwith.”
The next day, Tamar indirectly calls K. Michelle a bully by tweeting “ I really want 2 thank all of my #Tamartianfriend 4 being her 4 me ALWAYS! 4sticking up 2 da bullies, liars&Haters! #Sept3is4us #preorder.”
August 2013: Radio Show Shots
As K. Michelle continued to do press for her newly-released album, Rebellious Soul, she stopped by The Rise and Grind morning radio show to express why she felt Tamar really has it in for her.
“I don’t have no problem, but I guess it’s very depressing to be a 40-year-old muppet still trying to shake and make it. I wasn’t doing anything, I was working. I have actually even said good things, I like “Love and War.” I like the record. I’ve been saying really positive things about this woman, and she just can not take it. She can not take all of me.”
K. went on to say that she believes Tamar’s aggression towards her continues over K. being named the headliner when the two ladies had a performance at the same venue.
“We did a performance together and she was supposed to be the headliner, but I wound up being the headliner. That was a consensus of everybody,” she claimed.”You can’t necessarily be the headliner when you’re lip-synching the whole show. That is what it is.”
At around the same time, Tamar addressed the “wiggy” situation during a radio interview as well, saying:
“There’s nothing going on with me and K. Michelle. I didn’t at anybody (on Twitter). I really wasn’t talking about her. I was talking about the wig maker whom of which she stalked to get her her wig made by the same person. And that’s fine. He makes great wigs..”
Tamar also addressed the lip-synching fiasco, by telling the radio hosts: “She said I was lip synching. She said I was upset with her because she closed out a show. People have to be exposed for the lies they tell … that didn’t happen. As a matter of fact, she went on stage and came out and watched my show, so I don’t know where that came from,” later adding “In every situation I’ve had with this person, she’s invited herself to it like the whole Toya situation. I wasn’t talking to her.”
In was also in this same interview that Tamar explained the tweet that started it all was sent directly to her friend Toya, wishing her and her husband a happy honeymoon despite what others were telling them in light of K. Michelle’s domestic violence reveal.
It was insinuated a week or so after the radio interviews that this epic feud (that died and revived within a year) was finally over when K. Michelle Instagrammed this photo with the caption “Tuesday is going to be a great day for R&B. For years now we've been left with a lot of gimmick music. All differences aside REAL MUSIC is coming back, and I'm blessed to be apart of it! I'm buying ALL for [sic] of these albums. Yes, even Tamar's.”
Sigh. If it had only ended there...
September 2013: Rebellious Soul vs. Love & War
Though K. Michelle has proclaimed on Twitter that she did not dislike Tamar (or as she affectionately calls her, “Tamuppet”), the feud continued on.
Earlier this month, Tamar spoke with the hosts of the Breakfast Club radio show to promote her new album, Love and War. As you can expect, the hosts asked Tamar about her Twitter war with K. Michelle and it’s obvious from Tay-Tay’s responses, the bickering wasn’t ending anytime soon.
“I really don’t talk about the people who bully me and stuff. If you do one good gesture that doesn’t make up for you calling me a muppet. It doesn’t make up for you telling everybody that a lip sync,” adding “ I don’t even want to talk about her because on my third day, I sold over one-hundred thousand copies so we’re not even in the same conversations in life so why are we doing this?”
When asked if Tamar did the courteous thing (like K. Michelle), and purchase the LHHATL singer’s album, she responded, “Well you know, God is good. I bought mine.”
And unfortunately, K. heard the shots that were fired and retaliated:
“I'm really just trying to stay positive and live my life. I bought the album 2supprt her and everything. I don't get it. But I'm the bulley [sic],” she tweeted, adding “You keep throwing rocks at me and then u run and hide behind Vince's man boobs! U not above getting checked shady boots!” among other things:
In case you’re not up to speed, the numbers for Tamar’s album was projected to sell over 100,000 copies in its first week, but reached the goal after only three days on the shelf. However, K. Michelle’s album, Rebellious Soul, reached over 100,000 copies just a couple days after Tamar reached her goal.
So while the ladies are getting into a war of words over numbers, the fact remains that they’re both doing very well, though there are theories that not all of Tamar’s sales are from unique buyers… but that’s another story.
October 2013: Late Night Snubs
We thought the warring divas were in the clear as both Tamar and K. Michelle have been heavily involved in various projects. Both ladies are currently promoting their albums and respective reality TV shows, so one would think that their plates would be too full to fire shots, right? Wrong…
While making an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show to promote her newest single, “All the Way Home,” the singer sat down to answer questions from Twitter fans. After declaring that she had gone to “Shade Anonymous” to stay away from throwing shade, the singer did the exact opposite when Arsenio asked if they could talk about K. Michelle.
“Kmart? You mean, oh the store that Nicki Minaj has her clothes in? They’re amazing!” After Arsenio was taken aback by Tay-Tay’s answer, she followed up with “ That’s the only ‘K’ I know.”
Not one to take snubs lightly, K. Michelle came back with a barrage of insulting (yet funny) tweets for her musical rival.
“Always throwing shade, but I’m the bully. Oh,” Kay tweeted, adding “Sit yo funny face down and just sing. Leave me alone Miss Piggy. Slinging albums for 3.99.” But it didn’t end there. Kay-Kay went on to trash the Love and War crooner’s vocals.
“Everytime u hit the stage you got a disclaimer about why u sound so bad. How long do busted vocal chords last? Sheesh.”
But despite her harsh words, Kay said that she really didn’t hate Tamar… in a manner of speaking:
“‘@ShadesOfJai: Tamar & K. Michelle really do hate each other. I'm at the conclusion.’> no I don't I grew up on the Muppets,” she tweeted to her fans. Oh, Kay.
December 2013: Extending the Olive Branch
In November, both Tamar and K. Michelle had to take the stage to perform montages of their hit singles for the 2013 Soul Train Awards. Both ladies were up for nominations that night, with both ladies being nominated for Best New Artist. Though K. Michelle walked away with the award, Tamar nabbed two of her four nominations for the night and gave an emotional speech.
While live-tweeting the award show (which was taped in November), K. Michelle offered up a truce to Tay-Tay by tweeting, "I'll try this 1 mo time. Congrats @tamarbraxtonher We both been through hell fighting 4 a dream. Let's cut the s— and inspire.” Tamar failed to respond to K. Michelle's extended branch.
February 2014: Is it All Over?
On Valentine's Day, K. Michelle released her newest mixtape, No F—s Given, and shocked fans with a cover of Tamar's Winter Loversland song, "She Can Have You" on the track list. Many have taken K. Michelle's "cover" as a means of ultimately burying the hatchet between them, but it turns out that K. Michelle actually recorded the original version of the song a couple years prior by the "She Can Have You" songwriter/producer, TC.
Regardless of it all, the fact that K. Michelle decided to release the track might mean that she's definitely open to sharing the R&B spotlight... or it could just be another jab to prove what Tamar can do, she can do better.
We can only hope that these singers can find the time to end this feud once and for all, but until then, we’ll keep you updated. Now excuse us while we skim through their Instagram and Twitter pages.
