You may have heard us talk about the infamous Tamar Braxton, and her face off with K, Michelle, and countless other celebrity singers, but what else is there to this feisty singer aside from being known as the younger sister of Grammy-award winning singer, Toni Braxton? Read on for five things you should know about Tamar.
1. Tamar was physically abused in her past relationships
Tamar revealed during Season 1 of Tamar and Vince that she endured several abusive relationships. According to the clip, the beatings were quite severe and on one occasion the singer was dragged from her home by her hair! These days, Tay-Tay does not like to recount those days in live interviews, but she says that the ordeal did leave her feeling insecure.
“I didn’t feel like I was beautiful. I didn’t feel like I deserved things. I didn’t feel like I could stand in a room and speak or even sing and have people who wanted to listen," she confessed in an interview with Ebony. “I haven’t always been vocal about my feelings, especially in a relationship. Now, I make sure that I’m very vocal about my feelings, everybody knows how I feel. Sometimes it’s over the top and most of the time it’s ‘Team Too-Much,’” she laughs, “But I have to do a lot. (I was) a shy person who had self-esteem issues trying to figure it out — now, I’ve gotten over my hangovers. You say, I’m comfortable and confident, it took a long time to get there. Maybe like a year or so before Braxton Family Values, I wasn’t that person. I was faking it til I make it, pretty much.”
2. Tamar met her husband while he was still in a relationship.
As you may know, Tay-Tay is protective of her husband, Vincent Herbert, keeping him from the eyes of other women who may want him for themselves. And Tamar has every right to feel that way, since she met Vincent while he was still in a relationship!
Tay Tay first met Vince when he started working with her sister, Toni. The songstress jokes that Vince “kinda stalked” her since she was 15, and the two would continue to meet each other through the years. Finally Vince asked Tamar for her phone number to schedule studio time and the rest was history. The couple would date for 5 years before getting married in 2008 and then having their first son, Logan, in 2013.
3. Tamar has two other albums under her belt… in addition to Love and War
Although Tamar loves to credit her album Love & War as her first album, it’s actually her first album to chart at no. 1. In actuality, Tamar’s first album was called So Many Ways. It was from her group The Braxtons, which included her remaining sisters, Towanda and Trina Braxton (older sis Tracy Braxton wasn’t signed due to her pregnancy). The sisters had the hit song “So Many Way” in the ‘90s before Tamar went on to do her solo project Tamar (a reworked version of her first project Rebellious) with which produced the singles “Get None” and “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me” in the early 2000s. Despite charting the Billboard, Tamar’s album didn’t do very well and she was eventually dropped from her label.
4. Tamar worked with and for some of the industry’s finest in the ‘90s.
Along with singing backup for Toni (who included Tamar and the other Braxton sisters in several music videos), Tamar has worked with several artists in the industry, including an up-and-coming Mya (who once sang backup for Tay-Tay), singer Solé, producers Missy Elliott and Jermaine Dupri, and — believe it or not — industry mogul Jay Z!
5. Tamar admits to plastic surgery, among other corrective procedures.
Many have wondered just how Tamar has the looks that she’s got now, and have even insinuated that the R&B singer had tons of plastic surgery. While the “Love and War” vocalist has admitted to having several corrective nose surgeries (due to lack of cartilage), the only other corrective procedure Tamar had was braces to correct her teeth.
As for the rumors of skin bleaching and face lifts? The singer says that she’s never done anything so drastic to change her appearance. Tay-Tay revealed that she does have Vitiligo and tans her skin in order to even out her complexion, but other than that, she’s all natural. So, in the immortal words of Tay-Tay, “get yo life!”
As loud and bossy as she is, we have to admit — we just can’t get enough of Tamar.
