Gabby Douglas’s Hair: What’s All the Fuss About?
16-year-old Gabby Douglas made Olympic history as the first African-American woman to win the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around competition on August 2, but mere hours after big triumph, Gabby was facing criticism for a very unlikely reason: people just didn’t like her hairstyle.
During competitions Gabby made a habit of wearing her hair in a loose bun with pins scattered around to hold any stray hairs in place, and apparently her ‘do of choice had some people up in arms because they found it “ratch.”
Just like her nearly-flawless routines in the all-around competition, Gabby handled the hair controversy with grace and class, telling USA Today, “I just simply gelled it back, put some clips in it and put it in a bun. Are you kidding me? I just made history. And you're focusing on my hair?”
Gabby’s teammates on the American women’s gymnastics team seemed to agree that this was a whole lotta fuss about nothing, and in an apparent display of solidarity, the rest of the Fab Five wore their hair in a style similar to Gabby’s as they watched a later event.
Given that NeNe Leakes has had some questionable hairstyles through the years and Kim Zolciak’s hair troubles and wig collection are well documented, we really don’t see anything out of the ordinary about Gabby’s ‘do.
