Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton believes the rise of social media is partially to blame for her becoming a victim of the now infamous “Bling Ring” thieves. The exploits of the celebrity-targeting thieves hit the big screen on Friday in The Bling Ring. Paris Hilton was among a group of Hollywood elite successfully stalked by the real-life Bling Ring and has a cameo in the film.

In an interview on CNN’s Piers Morgan Live, Paris said her obsession with social media painted a target on her back for the Bling Ring thieves. “This could not have happened five, 10 years ago,” Paris said. “There wasn’t a Twitter or Facebook or any of these things, so nowadays people know exactly where you are.”

Paris said since she was robbed by the Bling Ring, that she has learned a valuable lesson about watching what she says in the social media world. “I’ve been more careful with that, and also putting the most extensive security system in my house, so this cannot happen again.”

In addition to breaking into Paris’ home, the Bling Ring also targeted such celebrities as Miranda Kerr, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Patridge and Megan Fox in 2008 and 2009. The Hilton heiress called the thieves “disgusting” for their brazen criminal acts. “I think it’s absolutely disgusting what they did,” Paris said. “When I was watching the movie I was just so horrified and disgusted by what they did to me. It was just so wrong, it just was very upsetting.”

Look for Paris in a cameo part in The Bling Ring from director Sofia Coppola, in theaters now starring Emma Watson, Katie Chang and Taissa Farmiga.
