It’s time for tears, clapping, and confusing voicemails on this week’s Reunion Part 2 recap of Real Housewives of Orange County. Tamra Barney admits to lying to Gretchen Rossi, while Gretchen and Alexis Bellino have a breakthrough. So put on your size 14 shoes, say goodbye to your Rolls Royce, and start reading your washing machine’s instruction manual!
The Truth Hurts
When the episode begins, Tamra is asked why she divulged painful secrets this season, including her suicide attempt at age 21. Tamra says she hadn’t even told new hubby Eddie Judge about her past, but watching her son Ryan go through similar struggles with depression made her address the issue. The ladies laud Tamra for making progress.
After lighthearted moments involving Vicki Gunvalson fessing up to a bad hair year — we feel ya, Vick! — things get heated when Gretchen pulls out messages from Tamra in which Tamra said she hates Alexis and doesn’t want her at the dress-shopping trip. Things get crazy as all the ladies try to tell Alexis who does or doesn’t like her. Talk about painful for poor Alexis!
Alexis even gets up to leave, but then she sits back down. Tamra says that she does genuinely like Alexis and admits to lying to Gretchen in the messages so as to not upset her. Shockingly, Alexis says she isn’t upset with Tamra since Tamra had already told her about writing those messages.
Who's Condescending to Whom?
Then, it’s time to discuss Malibu Country, which has at this point been discussed more on Housewives than it was by anyone when it was actually on the air. They argue over whether Gretchen lied about being offered a role, and Tamra applauds when Gretchen admits she hadn’t yet heard what she’d get paid by Malibu. Apparently, getting applause from these women is never a good thing.
More confusion ensues when Gretchen plays the initial voicemail from her agent about the gig, and the ladies can’t agree whether the message backs up Gretchen’s story or not. By the way, if we never hear the words “Malibu” and “Country” ever used in the same sentence again, it’ll be too soon.
After Heather makes a crack about Gretchen saying “con-den-scending,” Heather Dubrow calls Gretchen teflon, with Alexis saying Gretchen is only friendly with Lydia right now because she is using her. Alexis then says Gretchen told her she only became friends of Tamra because she was scared of her, which Gretchen denies. And Tamra and Gretchen both admit to having trouble trusting each other. We don’t blame them.
Proposing for the Cameras?
The ladies don’t seem to understand why Gretchen is so mad at Alexis, since nothing really happened between them on the show, but Gretchen says Alexis is fake on camera. Alexis says she felt that Gretchen applauding her exit from Tamra’s CUT Fitness dinner party proves that Gretchen really was a “mean girl”-esque bully. To paraphrase Mean Girls, that is so not fetch.
Finally, the ladies tell Gretchen that the timing of her proposal to Slade made it seem like it was tailored for the show rather than from the heart. Gretchen breaks down while watching the proposal, and the ladies tell her they’re happy for her but wish they’d been included in the event. Gretchen says the one person she wishes had been there was Alexis, who has supported her relationship with Slade since Day One. Aww!
All in all, this was another jaw-dropping reunion, but we actually enjoyed it much more than last week’s, since the ladies appear to be making genuine progress this week in their relationships. We’re finally seeing Alexis and Gretchen start to work on their rift, and Tamra and Gretchen just might be starting to work things out, too. Nothing wrong with baby steps.
Now, we can’t wait to see the conclusion of the reunion next week. In the meantime, does anyone want to do our laundry for us? No one?
