On Season 8 of Real Housewives of Orange County, we saw the pain that Vicki Gunvalson and daughter Briana experience every time Briana's husband, Ryan Culberson, ships out for a tour of duty with the Marines. Now, Ryan is going public about his struggles with post-traumatic stress.
Ryan — who lashed out verbally last season at Lydia McLaughlin's mom for putting her feet up on the couch — is participating in Save a Warrior this month, which is a five-day program geared toward helping war veterans. The program will be filmed for a documentary and is likely to air on CNN. Meanwhile, Briana is currently pregnant with the couple's second child.
"I’ve had issues for years that I have left unresolved," says Ryan, who returned from his fifth combat deployment in October 2013. "I just really want other Marines to be aware of programs like Save A Warrior and know that it’s OK to seek help."
Ryan makes it clear that Bravo hadn't asked him to seek treatment. "This is something I choose to do 100 percent on my own — I didn’t even feel the show needed to know anything about it," he explains. "But ... the scrutiny of being in the public eye hasn’t made dealing with [the issues] any easier." He adds that he no longer drinks or take anti-depressants and has started meditating twice a day.
We admire Ryan for being so open with his struggle, and we wish him and his family all the best.
Are you surprised that Ryan is opening up about PTSD?
