Things just keep getting worse for Teresa and Joe Giudice over a week after The Real Housewives of New Jersey couple was indicted on a whopping 39 counts of federal fraud, including bank fraud and tax evasion.

Despite insistence from Teresa’s lawyer that his client will be “vindicated,” a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline that the U.S. government has every intention of sending Teresa and Joe to the slammer, even if one or both of the reality stars are able to arrange a plea deal.

Plea talks between the United States Attorney’s Office and Teresa and Joe’s lawyers haven’t formally begun yet," the source explains, "but prosecutors are insisting that BOTH of them do time behind bars.”

The source goes on to explain that the government hopes to make an example out of Tre and Juicy Joe: “The government has a very, very strong case against the Giudices and wants to make an example of them. The Giudices will also be facing serious, significant financial penalties.”

As their August 14 arraignment nears, Teresa is holding out hope that she will be placed under house arrest, while her hubby takes the fall and heads to jail.

But as prison time becomes more and more likely for the couple, we’re sure they’ll take some comfort in knowing that numerous family members and RHoNJ co-stars have vowed to be there for their four daughters and help out in any way they can.

Do you think the Giudices are headed to jail?
