Some people just hear the words “Real Housewives” and you’ve already lost them. They make assumptions and apply generalizations to everyone in the cast, even though reality TV tends to have people across the spectrum — from the drama divas to the semi-normal people who aren’t too different from you or your neighbors.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Dina Manzo just talked to 103.5 KISSFM Chicago to promote her upcoming Project Ladybug charity fundraiser, and the radio host asked if she felt there was an unfair stigma around reality TV stars.
"You know, I do find that sometimes there is,” Dina answered, “but if you remain true to who you are, I think the viewers can see through a lot of the people who become caricatures of themselves and kind of do the outrageous to be outrageous." (Do you think she had some specific people in mind with that?) "So yes," she continued, "there are some people who haven't watched who right away hear 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' and think 'oh no.' But if they tune in and they see who you are they'll be able to see through a lot of that craziness and see your authentic self. And that's really what my goal is, to just continue to be who I am in this process and hope that people will connect with that, rather than the image of the show."
Hear, hear! Dina is returning to RHoNJ in Season 6, after a few years off. She said it was an emotional “roller coaster” the first time, but overall being on the show has been beneficial. Her childhood cancer non-profit, Project Ladybug, grew much faster because of the Bravo platform, and for that alone she's grateful.
Like anything in life, the experience is what you make of it. There’s always a trade-off, but good for Dina for using her TV powers for good (most of the time).
