Once Teresa Giudice was known for bringing the table-flipping drama, but on The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 6 her story is more likely to evoke tears than laughs. The Giudice family’s life-altering legal drama — Teresa and husband Joe are involved in a federal fraud case — was front and center in the Season 6 premiere, and watching Tre's daughter Gia try to deal with it was truly heartbreaking.
In fact, fans who tune in to Real Housewives of New Jersey to watch petty squabbles and over-the-top fights might find Teresa's story too heavy. Others might feel sorry for the Guidices and hope they somehow avoid jail time. So was it a mistake to focus so much on the legal drama as the cameras rolled? Andy Cohen doesn't think so.
On a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live, a viewer called in to ask about Joe and Teresa's plot this season, wondering if it's fair that they get to try to gain viewer sympathy by airing their troubles for the public to see.
"They didn't get out of jail to be on the Housewives of New Jersey," Andy pointed out. "They're going to have to do whatever time they do."
"My feeling is, this is a woman we've followed since the beginning of the show," he added. "And this is something that they've now plead guilty on, and we're now still following them and we're seeing what life is like after you plead [guilty]. It's a continuation of seeing what's going on with this person."
Watch What Happens Live guests Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper agreed, pointing out that the show is unlikely to have any impact on the judge who sentences the Guidices. And besides, while some people will end up feeling sorry for them, there are probably others rooting for them to wind up behind bars.
