Real Housewives of New Jersey

Teresa and Joe Giudice Fraud Case

On July 29, 2013 The Real Housewives of New Jersey stars Teresa Giudice and her husband, Joe Giudice, were indicted on federal fraud charges. The couple is accused of exaggerating their income in order to receive larger loans, which is something that was allegedly done even before RHoNJ debuted in 2009. They are also accused of failing to disclose all of their income when initially filing for bankruptcy later that year.

The 39-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications, and bankruptcy fraud. If Teresa and Joe are found guilty of all charges, they could each face more than 50 years in prison.

According to the indictment, the pair applied for various loans from 2001-2008, and on those loan applications they allegedly lied about their employment statuses and salaries. Teresa falsely claimed she worked as an executive assistant in 2001 when applying for a $121,000 mortgage loan, even submitting fake W-2 forms and pay stubs. The indictment also notes that Joe failed to file tax returns from 2004-2008, during which time he reportedly earned $1 million.

Teresa and Joe appeared in court before Judge Cathy Waldor in Newark, N.J. on July 30, 2013, where they were given an arraignment date of August 14. Teresa’s attorney, Henry Klingeman, stated that the Real Housewives star intended to plead not guilty to the charges.

As expected, Joe and Teresa both entered "Not Guilty" pleas and were given a trial date of October 8.

In a statement released after the indictment was made public, Teresa reiterated that she will stand by her husband. “Today is a most difficult day for our family. I support Joe and, as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me,” she noted before continuing, “I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career. As a result, I am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the government as quickly as possible.”|
