Former Real Housewives of New York star Kelly Bensimon is either been itching to do some stitching or she’s having a harder time with her finances than previously let on because she’s now making her own clothes to wear out and about.

Kelly’s money troubles came to light recently when she slashed the asking price on her house in the Hamptons in half and admitted she just “can’t afford the lifestyle” she could while married to French fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon. The self-proclaimed “working single mother” was optimistic about someday returning to a new home in the cushy vacation spot, but she maintained that she and her daughters — Sea Louise and Thadeus Ann — would keep a primary residence in Manhattan for a while first.

While that in and of itself doesn’t sound too bad, last night she stepped out for the “Connecting the Dots” book launch at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Center and wore a purple and grey sweater of her own design. In fact, Kelly admitted to making the shirts both she and Sea wore to the event.

Kelly’s a woman of many known talents – editing, modeling, writing, and jewelry designing among them – but we had no idea of her skills with needle and thread!

The Real Housewives of New York airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.
