When the effervescent Sonja Morgan toddled into the The Real Housewives of New York in the middle of Season 3, she quickly became one of the most beloved members of the cast. It’s no surprise then that Sonja’s charisma had caught Bravo producers’ eyes before she made her debut. The socialite/toaster oven chef tells Lifestyle Mirror (via Reality Tea) that she was actually asked to join the cast before the show even started, but she turned them down!

“Reality TV was first starting out. I didn’t know if it was going to be a cross between Jerry Springer and Desperate Housewives,” Sonja explains. (RHONY was the second series in the Housewives franchise, following the success of Real Housewives of Orange County.)

Luckily for us, Sonja eventually changed her mind and joined the cast, and the rest is reality show history.

Sonja went on to philosophize about her role on the show, and explain what she thinks the appeal of the Real Housewives franchise really is. “People want to see how real people live. It makes people feel like they’re not alone in the world,” she told the magazine. “That we’re all going through the same things, no matter where we live, how much money we have, or which family we were born into.”

Well, we also like seeing the trainwrecks, the cat fights, and the drunken soirees as well. Don’t forget to check out our recap of the Season 5 premiere.
