Carole Radziwill came under some fire when she suggested that the whole royalty title scheme — she’s a Polish princess by marriage, while her Real Housewives of New York co-star LuAnn de Lesseps is a countess by her former marriage — was “silly,” but it seems her words might’ve had an impact on LuAnn. Sonja Morgan, for one, has been glad to hear LuAnn use her title less and less this year.
LuAnn paraded her title around quite a lot prior to RHONY Season 5’s addition of the princess, even including it in the title to her book (Class with the Countess: How to Live with Elegance and Flair), even though her divorce from French nobleman Count Alexandre de Lesseps meant she technically lost her title. After Carole’s biting comments, however, her usage seemed to slip off quite a bit.
While Sonja does think LuAnn has a legitimate claim to her Countess title, she’s glad to see the divorcee use the moniker less lately.
In her latest Bravo blog, Sonja wrote “kudos” to LuAnn for giving the royalty card a rest.
“Lu lived with a man who lived the life of a count and was seated socially around the world at dinners using that title at placement dinner parties and was introduced with that title. Lu has children who will also carry that title, so it's very real for her,” said Sonja.
However, Sonja observes that by not using the title, “It just says she's becoming more secure as a single woman since her divorce. A lot of people said they enjoyed seeing the other side of her as a true friend when I took down the painting of my ex-husband. I'm happy we could do that together.”
LuAnn was, after all, the one to suggest Sonja needed to move on from her own ex-husband, John Morgan.
The Real Housewives of New York airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.
