The Season 9 premiere for The Real Housewives of Orange County was one of the most enjoyable hours in television history (seriously), but it looks like the one key ingredient that was missing was the viewership to back it up.

According to Zap2it, only 1.7 million viewers (and a 0.8 in the target demo) tuned in to see Vicki Gunvalson get her surf on, see Heather “Fancy Pants” Dubrow humblebrag about her giant dream home, and see Tamra Barney work on her fitness in her gym. In fact, we even got to meet one of the new ladies, Shannon Beador, and hear all about her green lifestyle and aversion to cell phones.

Just to put this premiere in perspective, Season 8 opened with 1.81 million viewers, down from the two previous years. Season 7 was watched by a whopping 2.26 million viewers while Season 6 garnered 2.05 million eyes glued to the screen.

We’ll admit we aren’t completely surprised by the ratings dip, as the premiere wasn’t exactly the most dramatic episode we’ve ever seen. It was a simple, lighthearted piece that followed three of our veteran housewives on vacay and introduced us to one of the newbies — we haven’t even seen Lizzie Rovsek yet!

This is just the beginning to what is sure to be a very dramatic season though, and we can’t wait to see what happens next!
