During her time on The Real Housewives of Orange County, we’ve seen Vicki Gunvalson go through many ups and downs with her (now) ex-husband Donn Gunvalson. One aspect of the veteran reality star’s life that we haven’t been privy to, however, is her first marriage to Michael Wolfsmith — that is, until now.

Vicki opened up to Star via RadarOnline.com about the “hard life” she and her “loser” first husband had in Chicago and how her negative experience helped turn her life around. Always the fighter, this one.

“It was a very hard life,” Vicki told the outlet. “I can’t fix his abusive nature and his screaming and his lies…it really gave me the initiative to go out and make a better life for myself, for my children.”

The 52-year-old married Michael in 1983 when she was just 21. Together they had two kids — Michael Jr. and Briana — though Vicki says it was hardly the picture-perfect family. She claims that Michael “was an alcoholic. She goes on to say that “he abused me verbally [and] he had many affairs during our marriage.” The couple divorced in 1992, when Vicki moved to the OC. Michael, on the other hand, didn’t exactly have much luck afterwards.

Star says Michael faced a slew of legal troubles, including: going to jail in 1997 for disorderly conduct and bail jumping, getting evicted, getting hit with a $14,337 tax lien in 2010, and having a warrant issued in 2014 for unpaid child support with his second wife. Quite the offender, huh?

Vicki maintains that she has no sort of relationship with her ex, and even Michael Jr. isn’t in contact with his dad. “I don’t talk to him,” he said. “He’s a loser. He hasn’t been a part of our lives for years.”

We’re glad Vicki has moved on from this not-so-sunny past. You go, girl!
