The first half of The Real Housewives of Orange County’s ninth season was a rocky one for the Beadors. The rock-and-roll couple’s relationship wasn’t jiving and, thanks to an infamous email, their marital spat was blown up for the world to see. While many would see this as a terrible turn of events, Shannon Beador saw it as an opportunity to get some perspective on her marriage.

Shannon, who joined the show for Season 9, spoke with Wetpaint Entertainment about airing her dirty laundry in front of the cameras, letting her kids watch their parents fighting on national TV, and whether she has any regrets about joining the series.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Were you nervous to go on RHOC given how rocky your relationship was with David at the time?

Shannon Beador: People might think this sounds strange, but that was one of the motivating factors for me to go on the show. I thought that if my husband saw our marriage play back, he’d go, ‘Oh my God, I need to spend more time with her.’

While he did get that realization — I had so much resentment because he wasn’t spending any time with me — I didn’t realize what a bitchy nag I was. I think it hit me a little more than it did him because I didn’t realize how mean I was being. I’m not that way all the time — clearly the show picks me in my worst moments to create some drama. I thought I could be a bit nicer and I have changed. I wanted my marriage to be played out because I thought we could improve the marriage. So far, so good.

What was the most shocking thing for you this season?

I don’t want to come across as a naive person because I don’t think that I am. I am a trusting person and I’m honest, but I’m also not naive. I would have to say that this whole email fiasco, people are saying, ‘Well, if you’re on a reality show, how can you be mad at Tamra?’ The email was never supposed to be brought up in front of the cameras. I called my ‘friend’ Tamra off-camera and said, ‘My husband sent me this email. What should I do?’ She said, ‘Don’t bring it up on camera, it’s going to hurt your kids.’ I thought, ‘Wow, what a good friend.’

Tamra decided to bring the email up so I was forced to address it on the show. It was something I wasn’t planning on talking about and my ‘good friend’ Tamra said she wouldn’t either, but she decided to change the rules. I think that was the most shocking for me.

It hurt my kids. No kid wants to hear that mommy and daddy are potentially separating when we had a 24-hour argument that a lot of couples have. That was disappointing.

Did your kids watch this season? What did they think of it all?

They did. I might get some criticism for that, but I believe that life is life, and if my kids can see that marriages have rough patches and you can work through them and improve on that relationship, I’m teaching my kids a good lesson.

Do you have any regrets about joining RHOC?

There is good and there is bad, but the good has definitely outweighed the bad. I don’t want to go through life regretting things. Yeah, there’s been some tough times in the last year or so, but where I am today, I’m in a really good place.
