While audiences were left stunned by Rachel Frederickson’s winning 155-pound weight loss on the February 4 finale of Biggest Loser, nobody appeared more thrown than Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. The NBC competition’s resident fitness coaches were unable to hide their initial shock at the reveal. Now, Bob is finally addressing his reaction, and sharing what he was really thinking in that moment.

During an appearance on The Rachael Ray show that was taped February 6 — it will air February 13 — Rachael asked the trainer point blank if he thought Rachel had lost too much weight. (FYI: The 24-year-old Biggest Loser went from 260 pounds to 105 pounds, for a stunning 59.62 percent drop in body weight.)

"What people don't understand is, when the contestants leave to go home… they're in charge of themselves," Bob explains to the talk show host. "So I had not seen her until that night, and so when she walked out, I was just kind of like, whoa. And I've been on the show since the beginning."

The same could be say for viewers, who had last seen Rachel at around a healthy 150 pounds in the final weeks of taped episodes. Most people probably didn’t expect to see the contestant lost an additional nearly 50 pounds in the weeks leading up to the finale — and that includes Bob, himself.

"I was stunned. That would be the word," he reveals. "I mean, we've never had a contestant come in at 105 pounds."

Until now, Bob (and Jillian) had avoided responding to Rachel’s record-breaking weight loss directly, choosing to defer to her on-show trainer, Dolvett Quince, and the show’s producers.

"Jillian and I want to take a moment to congratulate all of the BL contestants on their hard work,” Bob said in his original statement on February 5. “We're not comfortable commenting on Rachel's journey because we weren't her trainers and weren't given an opportunity to work with her at any point."

Rachel herself has steered clear of addressing the negative press, and she’s since insisted that she feels “amazing” about her current body. "I feel truly alive and just transformed. I couldn't be more happy, more thankful to get this second chance to take charge of my life again."
