American Idol 2014 Recap: Season 13 Top 10 Perform — March 19, 2014

It's Wednesday again and that means another two-hour serving of American Idol. As hard as it may be to believe, we're just about to hit single digits with the Season 13 contestants. Last week we decided which lucky 10 would be hitting the road this summer for the Idol tour and got one step closer to crowing the season's champ. Unfortunately, that meant Ben Briley had to go home but so is the way of reality TV.

Tonight the Top 10 will perform songs featured on the Billboard Top 10 from 2010 to the present. That's any song they want that meets that very broad criteria. The options seem endless but somehow the remaining performers made their picks. In fact, we've already heard what each might be singing. Check that out here if you don't mind spoilers. We obviously don't seeing as we've already printed out the lyrics for each and every song so we can singalong tonight. We're calling it "living room karaoke."

The new episode begins tonight at 8 p.m. and we'll be live recapping each and every moment. If you're interested in following along (aka you're not too busy using your remote as a mic) be sure to check back here at eight on the dot. The episode will last two whole hours before tomorrow night's one-hour elimination episode starting at 9 p.m. on Fox. See y'all later!

Live Recap Starts Now!

Welcome back, Top 10! We know that the group we have now will be the people who'll be on the American Idol tour this summer, so maybe tonight's performances will serve as a preview of what we'll see them do on the road? Either way, we're excited to watch the contestants take on tonight's theme — Billboard chart toppers! Also, how fab does J.Lo look tonight? We are loving the French braid on her!

We are officially jealous of the group getting to hang out at On Air With Ryan Seacrest during these cute little promos. It's almost enough to convince us to audition, despite the fact that singing anywhere but the shower paralyzes us with fear.

MK Nobilette
: "F—king Perfect" — Pink
After MK's massive comeback last week, we're expecting good things from her this time around. A Pink song is perfectly suited for her voice, and she's sporting so much confidence! We're liking the pink streaks in her hair for the occasion, too. So what'd the judges think? Keith would prefer to see her owning the stage even more than she already is, but we definitely think she's made a lot of progress since we first met her at auditions.

Dexter Roberts
: "Cruise" — Florida Georgia Line
This week, Country Boy is taking on the song that took over in summer 2013. We love that he put his own twist on the number by starting off slow and then breaking into a more familiar version of the song, which the audience definitely responded to well. But Jennifer did have a point when she said that he could have done better at keeping the audience engaged the entire time. They seemed a little bored in the beginning.

Jena Irene Asciutto
: "Clarity" — Zedd ft. Foxes
Jena gave an energy-filled performance of "Clarity" — glow sticks and all! When the judges talk about owning the stage, this performance is a great example of it. Not surprising at all that the judges totally loved it, too.

Alex Preston
: "Story of My Life" — One Direction
We aren't the only ones excited that One Direction is finally being performed, right? Alex manages to take a boy band song and turn it into something we would never have guessed came from One Direction... if we weren't obsessed with Harry Styles, that is. Alex's unique voice really showed through — and J.Lo was dancing along the whole time. Definitely a good sign!

Malaya Watson
: "When I Was Your Man" — Bruno Mars
Malaya's taking on a Bruno Mars song for the second time this season — the first was "Runaway Baby." The judges weren't crazy about her performance that night, so hopefully this time it's different! This song definitely seems more suited to her voice, anyway. She pulled off those high notes, much to the audience's joy. Jennifer and Harry absolutely loved it, too, and girl looked good!

Caleb Johnson
: "The Edge of Glory" — Lady Gaga
Here comes Caleb, who's totally knocked it out of the park every single time he's opened his mouth so far this season. Tonight was no exception as he gave his own, rockier spin on Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" and made it sound like a brand new song we haven't heard all over the radio. Way to give new life to an old hit single! Harry gave him an A, too, and so did Keith and Jennifer though they both want to see a little more emotion in the weeks to come.

CJ Harris
: "Invisible" — Hunter Hayes
CJ is back after an awesome performance last week, this time taking on Hunter Hayes's "Invisible." Glad to see the country boys are staying country this week, since Ben Briley's departure from his usual southern theme resulted in him being voted off the show. While we thought he gave a solid performance, Keith points out that not only did he sound better in rehearsals, that he was out of tune this time. Jennifer agrees that this "wasn't what it should have been," although his heart was definitely in it.

Jess Meuse
: "Pumped Up Kicks" — Foster the People
Jess and her guitar are back to perform "Pumped Up Kicks," which Jess says she likes because it's got an upbeat melody with really creepy lyrics. Her vocals were good, as usual, but she didn't manage to connect well enough to what she was singing. As the judges pointed out, she kind of managed to keep a poker face through the entire song.

Majesty Rose
: "Wake Me Up" — Avicii ft. Aloe Blacc
Majesty gave one of the best performances this season. Could that song have been more perfect for her? She did an awesome job at making "Wake Me Up" her own, and we actually love the song more now that we've heard her version. But while Harry was just as impressed as we were, Jennifer and Keith weren't so much. We don't get it. We thought it was amazing!

Sam Woolf
: "We Are Young" — Fun ft. Janelle Monáe
Sam sounded awesome performing Fun's hit and closed out the show with great reviews from all three judges. Except for the one piece of constructive criticism that just about everyone's received tonight: Own that stage!

Now that we've seen the Top 10 perform, it's time to vote. Who's going home this week? We'll find out tomorrow at 9 p.m. when the competition narrows it down to single digits!
