Pretty Little Liars Recap: Season 4, Episode 19 — “Shadow Play”
Talk about seeing things in black and white! In this week's noir-rific Pretty Little LiarsSeason 4, Episode 19 (“Shadow Play”) recap, Spencer needs some sleep, Paige and Emily heat things up, and that painting of Ali is totally giving us the heebie-jeebies.
Wherein Spencer Proves Yet Again Why Camera Phones Are the World’s Best Invention
First of all, Spencer: It's time to just say no to those pills. Also, we’re not ones to typically snap photos of every page in every book we pick up, but maybe we should start. Sure enough, Spencer’s photos of Ali’s diary pay off, as the retrieved diary from Ezra’s desk contains a slew of changed words. Uh, doesn’t it seem like an awful lot of work for “A” to change all the words? Wouldn’t it have been easier for “A” to just burn the stupid thing?
Wherein Aria Just Can’t Quit Ezra
Spencer might be addicted to pills, but Aria is in serious need of Ezra detox. During Spencer’s noir fantasy, Aria admits to Spencer that she’s still in love with Ez, and then at the end of the episode, the Liars spot Aria and Ezra kissing. Come to think of it, maybe it would be good if Toby really had knocked Ezra out.
Wherein Hanna Is Over Men — But Wearing a Hat Like Nobody’s Business
Seriously, we would pay money to be able to look as good as Hanna does in that hat she's rocking in the fantasy. Hanna also is even more clever than usual, as she helps Spencer track down Ali in the black-and-white world based on the phone call made to the Fitzgerald Art Foundation. However, hearing Hanna complain about men just reminds us how much we miss Haleb. Hang in there, H!
Wherein Emily and Paige Are the Cutest Couple Ever and We Just Want to Squeeze Them Forever and Ever Until They Burst
Emily and Paige are ridiculously perfect together today, especially with Paige telling Emily that she never wants to see her walk away. And how hot was the scene where they got it on? Okay, so Paige is still kinda suspicious to us, but we’re trying to ignore the suspicions for the time being. Where you at, Team Paily? We’re with you a bajillion percent! (Or, y’know, at least 100 percent.)
— Okay, so we have a feeling that this episode is going to be quite polarizing for people. Frankly, we loved it, since it’s really cool for the show to adopt the old-timey noir style. That said, not too much actually happened in it, and the action was definitely slower than normal. But we still kinda want to see a black-and-white throwback episode every year!
— Given that Ali’s diary was in Ezra’s room, it seems as though Ezra was the one who snagged it from the cabin — or someone at least wants it to seem like he did. So is Ezra the person who changed all the words in it? We do know that he’s a fan of writing, after all.
— The Liars spot Mona carrying a bunch of papers in the hallway at the beginning of the episode. So what exactly is she up to? We still can’t quite figure out how she and Ezra are connected.
— We get to hear a chunk of text from Ali’s diary when Spencer mentions that “Ambrose Pavilion” has been changed to “Ambrose Pearson.” So what is this pavillion, and why does “A” want it kept a secret?
— In Spencer’s black-and-white dream, Paige asks Aria all about photography. This is interesting, given that “A” clearly loves snapping photos of the Liars. We really want to believe that Paige is not “A,” but we just don't know about her sometimes.
— Speaking of Paige, Toby tells Spencer to "look at the pages," which sounds an awful lot like "look at the Paiges." Is he trying to tell us that Paige is up to something?
— In the final scene in the black-and-white dressing room, is that Aria's leopard-print dress — which she wears while kissing Ezra in the present-day scene prior — that we see bunched up on a chair?
Other Things That Need to Be Discussed:
— The dialogue was all great this week. But without question, the best line was Hanna's remark about "the 'A'-ness of it all." Somehow, Hanna is always the butt of the joke.
— It was so cute to see all the girls in old-fashioned gloves throughout the episode. Usually, the only person wearing gloves on this show is also wearing a black hoodie and is about to break about a dozen laws.
— Yes, we loved all the throwback fashions and hairdos this week. However, our favorite part was seeing noir Toby going with hair gel. Surprisingly, it totally works for him.
— We adore Spencer’s sweater from the in-color world, with those two foxes on it. We’re still not sure what the fox says, but we’re guessing it would be: “Stay away from ‘A.’”
