Pretty Little Liars Recap: Season 4, Episode 20 — “Free Fall”
Need a (ski) lift? In this week’s completely game-changing Pretty Little Liars (Season 4, Episode 20: “Free Fall”), Ezra is a little too invested in his research, Spencer needs another fix, and every girl in this town apparently looks the same when they’re wearing a wig.
Wherein Aria Learns That Ezra Might Not Be “A” — But He Is an A—hole (See What We Did There?)
Aria made a ton of great decisions this week, between realizing that Ezra knew about the helmet and tattoo, and then figuring out that Ezra’s security code is their jukebox song number. But she made one terrible one: Why the heck did she pull Ezra’s manuscript out of her bag on the ski lift? Grrr. Then again, even getting on an abandoned ski lift in the middle of the night was probably a questionable decision itself.
So where does Ezria go from here? Well, they have a history of getting mad about Ezra and some girl, only to make up a few episodes later (think: the Jackie drama). That said, we did notice that Ezra didn’t exactly say no when Aria brought up him having impregnated Ali. Not a good sign.
Wherein Hanna Wants to Get These Motherf—kin’ Snakes Out of This Motherf—kin’ Pavilion
Does anything that Hanna did in this episode matter as much as the fact that Ravenswood has been canceled? That opens the door for Caleb to return to the show, and HALEB CAN GET BACK TOGETHER AND WE CAN’T EVEN THINK RIGHT NOW BECAUSE WE’RE TOO HAPPY ABOUT HALEB AND AAAAAAGH. Sorry — what were we saying? Something about Hanna?
Wherein Spencer Wants a Bitter Pill to Swallow
It was not a good day to be Spencer. First, she spends the night in a classroom, which is dorky even by her school-loving own standards. Then, her adorable, necklace-filled plans with Toby fall apart after she tries to get her family doctor to hook her up.
Her mom also fills us in on Spencer’s previous addiction issues, which sound pretty freakin’ serious. But on the bright side, this means Spencer can stop looking like an extra from The Walking Dead, so there’s that.
Wherein Emily Grabs the Coffee Bag in the Nick of Time
If we hadn’t known better, we might have assumed that Emily and Hanna were the sleep-deprived ones, since they didn’t know what Spencer looks like with a blonde wig on. And by the way, does Emily have to pay for those broken plates out of her salary at The Brew? Plates don’t grow on trees, Em. Well... paper plates do, but that’s not the point.
Thankfully, Emily picks up the bag with Ali’s cash in it, but we still don’t know who the blonde in the snake house was. And after the snake-in-the-dressing-room incident from Season 3, you’d think that these girls would follow Indiana Jones’s mantra and stay far away from those things.
— Okay, first thing’s first: This is our favorite non-finale episode ever! The episode is amazing, especially coming after last week’s episode, which didn’t exactly blow everyone away. True, the show has once again misled us about someone being “A” (*cough* Toby), and now we know Ezra is definitely not “A.” Still, the fact that he has such a crazy history with Ali is pretty darn shocking.
— But what is that history with Ali? Why did they break things off? And when was the last time he saw her? We really want to believe he didn’t knock her up (ew!), but at this point, we wouldn’t put anything past the guy.
— How did Ezra know to pack up his surveillance equipment in the cabin basement before Aria got there? Or is that just how he keeps the basement when he’s not staying there? In fact, we still don’t really get why Ezra kept wanting Aria to come out to the cabin in the first place.
— Who was the person in the wig at the zoo? It’s likely to be Ali’s twin - but maybe it’s Mona? After all, Mona was definitely late to her date with Mike. And after hearing the words “black mamba” mentioned so many times, we wonder if the person in the wig is indeed the Black Widow. Oh, and by the way, who knew that Mona and Mike would be so cute? (Is that wrong to say?)
— What exactly happened the last time that Spencer was hooked on pills? Spencer’s mom says her parents can’t cover for her this time, so something quite bad seems to have happened. In Spencer’s drug-induced fantasy last week, Ali says that she should maybe be afraid of Spencer and that Spencer tried to kill her once. Could this refer to something from Spencer’s junkie past?
— How did Wren’s pad get in Spencer’s bag? Is this a sign that “A” is trying to set Wren up - or perhaps that Wren is indeed working with “A”? Maybe the person who got the pad is someone who has a rocky past with Wren, like Melissa.
— The last time we saw a snake on this show, which was during the dressing room scene in Season 3, CeCe came to the rescue by hitting it on the head. So maybe CeCe has a thing for snakes, which is a sign that she was the one at Ambrose Pavilion?
Other Things That Need to Be Discussed:
— Yes, we like that Ezra is a creeper, since it’s so out-of-left-field. But making him a reporter who falls in love with a person he’s doing research on? That suddenly feels borrowed from a rom-com. Basically, Ezra is Matthew McConaughey’s character in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, and Aria is the flighty but sensitive Kate Hudson. Alright, alright, alright.
— Speaking of movies, we’re thinking that Ezra got his “hide something in a hollowed-out book” idea straight out of TheShawshank Redemption. Come to think of it, maybe Hanna’s mom should have tried tunneling out of jail with a rock hammer when she was locked up.
