Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Season 9, Episode 23 — Who Cheats? Who Gets Engaged?

It’s the penultimate episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 9, and the superstorm promised to send the hospital into major crisis mode is about to roll in. In Season 9, Episode 23 ("Readiness Is All"), Owen prepares the doctors for the rush of storm victims who will be coming in soon and Bailey, still not ready to operate, volunteers to print out the patients’ charts in case the computers crash. Ben is back, and he confirms to Owen that Bailey just doesn’t feel like she can go into an OR again yet.

Alex brings in Jason, who’s so beaten up he’s practically unrecognizable while Owen, with Ethan in his father’s room, talks to him about the possibility of living with a foster family. His grandmother is ready to pull the plug and let him go, but Owen says it’s still too soon. Cristina, bound and determined to find a way to get him to wake up, orders more tests. Owen asks Meredith about when she adopted Zola, and we can see the gears turning - he definitely wants to take care of Ethan.

The first storm victim makes his way into the hospital - a guy who was knocked off a roof and has a few bars going straight through him. April’s about to retake her oral boards, and she really wants this case, but Owen does not want her working on him. April stays with the patient anyway, and the only way they can get the bars out of this guy is by using a grinder.

Sounds simple, right? Not so much when the only way to cut them is to use a tool that sends out sparks in a room full of oxygen. There’s a huge potential the OR could explode, so everyone non-essential is sent out, including Meredith, who isn’t thrilled she’s being exiled for being pregnant. Eventually, April does get kicked out and is replaced by Richard, who originally asked Bailey to fill in but she refused. Callie and Owen try to offer him advice Bailey needs to come back to the OR in her own time. Richard disagrees they just need to rip off the bandaid.

Jackson, Arizona, and visiting doc Lauren (Hilarie Burton) are putting the finishing touches on their tiny patient — the skin graft on his face went perfectly, and Jackson loves Lauren’s energy — it reminds him of Sloan (sob!). Arizona loves Lauren’s energy too, though... a little too much, if you ask us.

Meredith and Cristina get wind of the Jason situation and go straight to Alex to yell at him for beating him up... but things aren’t exactly how they seem. Plot twist: Alex just found him that way after Jo beat the snot out of him. According to Jo, Jason was fine when she left him — in fact, he was even still yelling, but now he’s unconscious. Cristina sends her home and Derek and Brooks take Jason into surgery.

Later, Meredith catches up with Jo in the stairwell and warns her not to let Alex take the fall for what she’s done, because that’s the type of person he is. On her way up the stairs, she falls and is in tears - poor Mer!

Cristina’s super excited because she found a clot in Ethan’s dad’s head that they previously missed, and removing it could wake him up. Derek and Brooks get right to work dislodging the clot when Derek finds out about Meredith’s fall, and he leaves Brooks in charge to go meet Meredith in OB where she’s getting checked out. Meredith and McBaby are both fine — hooray!

April goes to Jackson to vent about being kicked out of the OR when trauma is coming in. April goes outside to meet the ambulances and finds herself in the middle of... a giant flash mob? Yep, a giant flash mob that ends in a proposal from Matthew. As much as we love, love, love Japril, we have to admit, it was kind of adorable. She says yes (and really, we would have too) but exchanges a longing glance with Jackson afterward. Aww.

Inside, we find out Cristina’s idea worked and Ethan’s dad is awake. Best news ever! But not for Owen, who actually looks disappointed that now he won’t have the option of adopting Ethan. Richard stops by the desk where Bailey and a very whiny Shane have been working on the charts and tells Bailey she’s gotta do surgery or leave. She must take him seriously, because she goes directly to the OR board and writes in her and Shane’s names for an upcoming surgery.

Meanwhile, Jason’s awake... and he’s looking for the police. Alex goes to talk to him, and tells him he’s better off just keeping his mouth shut — all his friends are the owners of this hospital, and besides, all people are going to see is that Jason hit Jo. If a girl hits you, you don’t fight back, but Jason did. Alex promises he will never work again if he reports this, and Derek overhears, kinda not thrilled that Alex is threatening/blackmailing someone. We hope Jason never works again, too, but Derek might have a point. When Alex gets home, Jo is waiting, and as you can expect, they have an argument. But it’s cut short when a tree comes through the front window of the house... yeah, this storm is definitely going to be a big one.

Back at the hospital, the power’s starting to surge, and Arizona shows Lauren the on-call room, where she’s spending the night to make sure she’s there in case anything happens with her patient. They say their goodbyes, and Arizona is THIS CLOSE to getting out of there with no damage done when the power fails and she ends up making out with Lauren. No no no no no no! (Peyton Sayer, how could you?!)

Callie, Meredith, and Derek are setting up cots in the hospital, ready to stay for the night. Callie goes off looking for Arizona (uh oh...) and Meredith goes into labor! This means two things: the baby is finally coming, and the hospital should probably go shopping for a new couch.
