American Idol 2014 Recap: Season 13 Top 13 Elimination — February 27, 2014
Bring along your tissue boxes tonight. From what we've seen of American Idol Season 13 thus far, we have a hunch tonight's one-hour elimination show is going to be an emotional one. The Top 13 have worked so hard to get to this point and now one has to say goodbye when he or she is just getting started. Oh the humanity!
In case you missed it, last night the contestants performed for two hours on the the brand new Idol stage, which, side note, really paid for itself what with all the fancy graphics and pyrotechnics. While some of the singers sounded flat, others totally soared with judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick, Jr., and Keith Urban dishing out the tough love like the pros they are.
Yesterday was, of course, also the big reveal of Idol's new voting strategy for Season 13. There are new ways to cast your vote this year and thanks to the careful guidance of host Ryan Seacrest, we got all the deets. If you need a refresher and Ryan's not picking up his cell, we've also got them here.
Tune in to Fox tonight for the one-hour elimination show starting at 8 p.m. We're expecting two special guest stars, including last year's winner Candice Glover, before Ryan drops the hammer on one unfortunate wannabe star. Join us here for all the latest as the episode airs live on the East Coast.
It's the first results show of the season — yay! After that intro, we're expecting an awesome show tonight. Who's going home? No idea so far, but we're loving all this behind-the-scenes stuff from after last night's show.
Ben is officially safe, thanks to voters, but we had a feeling it would pan out that way. Alex and Jena are also safe, but Malaya is in the bottom three. Guess her Bruno Mars performance didn't impress the audience enough — or, apparently, J.Lo.
MK Nobilette, Sam Woolf, Majesty Rose, and Dexter Roberts are up now. Dexter's in to join his buddy in country crime, Ben. So are Majesty and Sam, but MK is in the bottom three with Malaya. Yikes! Keith says in the future, she should make sure she makes an emotional connection with the music and the audience in her future performances if she wants to stay in.
After the next segment, we learn that Caleb Johnson, Emily Piriz, Jess Meuse, and CJ Harris are all safe, and Kristen O'Connor, who pulled a big risk singing Kelly Clarkson's "Beautiful Disaster" last night, joins Malaya and MK in the bottom three. Uh oh — we're getting even closer to finding out who's been voted out.
After the very first nationwide vote of the season, we have our first elimination: Kristen. This singing nurse is headed home, but not until after her final performance of her Rush Week song, "Turning Tables" by Adele.
Don't be too bummed, Kristen — making it to the Top 13 is still huge, and now, literally millions of people have seen what you can do on national television. The only direction you can go now is up!
The Top 12 perform next week on Wednesday, March 5. Ryan tells us the theme is "Home" so start brainstorming those song picks now!
