Reign’s Mary Weds Francis, Not Bash — But There’s No Happy Ending!
Yesterday night’s Reign Season 1, Episode 13: “The Consummation” brought so many twists and turns, we’re dealing with a serious case of whiplash right about now. Mary chooses to marry Bash! Nope, she actually picked Francis! Clarissa's dead! Oops, turns out she’s actually alive!
The biggest surprise of the night, though, had to do with the prophecy surrounding Francis’s death. Nostradamus’s visions had always told him that Francis would die if he and Mary ever wed. Clarissa's death appeared to reverse that fate, so Francis and Mary happily walked down the aisle with no reservations.
It’s not that she doesn’t care about Bash. Mary feels love for both brothers, but she’s clearly in love with Francis more. “It’s you. It’s always been you,” she tells him. They marry. The consummate the relationship — while everyone watches, per court tradition — and that’s where Mary and Francis’s happily ever after takes a terrible turn.
After learning that Clarissa is actually alive, Nostradamus’s eyes are then opened to see the next few seconds in his vision. It turns out that Mary and Francis hadn’t been married for years, as he’d thought, but only about one year. Then Francis’s ear starts bleeding, his eyes flutter close, and he dies in his sleep.
Did you keep up with all that? Because all those twists and turns can be a little hard to follow. Oh, and not to mention the whole Queen of England being dead thing was also a total fabrication. There’s so much deception and trickery (coughMary’smothercough) we can hardly keep it all straight.
But when all is said and done, we’re stuck with the grim reality that Francis really is going to die. His death is now officially in the cards. It’s now only a matter of time. What do you make of it?
