Game of Thrones Renewed For Seasons 5 and 6! (VIDEO)

The Game of Thrones Season 4 premiere pulled in a record number of viewers, and HBO reacted to the good news by renewing the fantasy drama for not one but two more seasons. That's right Game of Thrones Season 5 and Season 6 are a go!

President of HBO programming Michael Lombardo announced the good news today, saying, "Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other. [Showrunners] David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."

While we're delighted that HBO has gone ahead and officially locked the show down for two more seasons, this news isn't exactly a surprise. A Season 5 renewal was all but given, and in the past the showrunners have mentioned a target length of seven seasons. Since more and more viewers flock to the addictive drama every year, there's no reason to think it can't last as long as the showrunners want it to.

The more interesting question is if this renewal news will do anything to make A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin write the sixth book in the saga, The Winds of Winter, any faster. After all, every new season of the show brings the series one step closer to overtaking the books its supposed to be adapting.
