More Boys Than Ever Are Accidentally Slamming Their Penises With Toilet Seats

So you've got a little boy or two. You've got to worry about stranger danger and perhaps the idea of them playing a bit too rough. And then there's teaching them not to slam their penises with the toilet seat? Wait... what!?

A new study published in the BJU International urology journal found that cases of emergency room visits caused by the ol’ toilet/penis slam increased by a rate of 100 per year between 2002 and 2012. As Gawker points out, the title of the article is ominous enough: “Falling toilet seats: Rare but growing risk for boys.”

The author of the study, Benjamin Breyer, suggests this number could just be the “tip of the iceberg" (awkward phrasing there), as some parents might not take their kids to the ER after the incidents. Fortunately, the “vast majority” of those who did make the trip were sent home no worse for wear.

So how do you solve for this unfortunate problem? According to Breyer, you should swap out those ceramic penis-slammers for the “slow close” or “soft fall” models. Apparently, there are also U-shaped models that have the front (read: penis-slamming) part cut out of them.

What is not clear is what’s with the increase. Are boys in such a hurry to get back to their iPads that their penises pay the price? Who knew going to the bathroom could be such a hazard? Perhaps there needs to be an extra step added to the potty-training process: Step 5 — Do NOT slam penis with seat.

Has this ever happened to you or anyone you know?
