The Return of Reading Rainbow? LeVar Burton Needs Your Help to Make It Happen!

Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high. Take a look, it's in a Kickstarter? A reading rainbow!

If you were one of the many children inspired to read by PBS classic Reading Rainbow, now is your chance to bring the childhood magic back thanks to a Kickstarter campaign backed by Reading Rainbow host (and Star Trek actor) LeVar Burton, who aims to bring the beloved program to a whole new generation of kids.

Let's be clear upfront: LeVar isn't trying to get the show, which went off the air in 2006, back on TV. Instead, his goal is less glamorous, but way more ambitious: he wants to put the entire Reading Rainbow library on the web with a specialized classroom version delivered to schools in need of the show to help fight childhood illiteracy for free.

There's actually already a Reading Rainbow app for tablets, but LeVar's vision is much bigger than that. Here's what the Kickstarter page has to say about their goal of $1 million:

Every Home. Reading Rainbow’s digital collection already contains hundreds of books and video field trips… but with your help, we’ll be able to make the Reading Rainbow library available on more of the devices modern kids use to consume content. When we meet our initial goal of $1,000,000, we will launch a new version of Reading Rainbow on the single most-used digital platform: the web.

Every Classroom. Together, we want to provide Reading Rainbow to as many classrooms as possible FOR FREE! When we meet our initial goal of $1,000,000, we can put Reading Rainbow in over 1500 classrooms at no cost to the schools!

Sounds awesome, right? Well, if you want to contribute, just head on over to Kickstarter. On top of helping fight childhood illiteracy, you can get some sweet Reading Rainbow swag. Ain't nothing wrong with that!
