Once Upon a Time Review: What Did You Think of Season 3, Episode 7, “Dark Hollow”?

Once Upon a Time went back to Storybrooke, in Season 3, Episode 7: "Dark Hollow," but things were far from normal for our Maine residents. With the race to save Henry crazier than ever and tensions high in Neverland, happy endings seem impossible — though many shippers got a satisfying moment or two.

For six episodes, we haven’t seen anyone react to the Neverland problems in Storybrooke, but that all changed tonight when the show went into a slight flashback mode. It turns out that the cloaking spell only happened five days ago, and the episode kicked off with the dagger driven into Rumbelle fans’ hearts as we relived that devastating moments and watched Belle sob once Rumple sailed away.

With the gang back together, they set off to hide the town with Rumple’s spell, but two new villains — surprisingly named Glasses and Keychain — manage to get in just under the wire, kidnapping new friends Ariel and Belle at gunpoint just after they discover the item Gold hid away for them: Pandora’s box.

Meanwhile, in Neverland, Henry’s rebellious streak changes everything, and unfortunately, Pan is one step ahead of him. Robbie Kay’s portrayal is so devious, yet charming and delightfully evil that we want to applaud him. The big reveal finally happened with Wendy Darling stepping out of the cage rather than Rumple’s father or someone like Tiger Lily, and she was tasked with lying to Henry, tricking the truest believer into thinking that saving her from a mysterious illness was worth risking his own life. Really, Pan just needs Henry to believe in him, which is seemingly happening seamlessly now. Oh, and “Glasses” and “Keychain” are really her brothers John and Michael, both of whom were kept around by Pan to do his dirty work.

Speaking of Neal, the love triangle is alive and not-so-well, folks. Turns out Emma forgot to mention that little kiss and Neal couldn’t hear their truth-telling in the cave, and when Hook spills the beans, things get awkward. In addition to a snarky quip when Neal discovers Emma has his sword — “I wanted to give Emma something to remember you by,” Hook says, to which Neal replies, “Oh, thanks, she’s got me now.” — they fight over a lighter when trying to capture Pan’s shadow in a dangerous cave (Dark Hollow) and nearly get killed. While the captain melted our hearts with his plans to woo Emma — “When I win your heart, and I will win it, it will because you want me.” — she eventually pulls a 90210 and chooses herself (well, and her son, Henry) instead of either of them… for now.

Even Swan Queen fans got a moment tonight when Emma was only able to save the day by using the magical tips that Regina gave her. But at the end of the day, our hearts were all about Rumbelle. Rumple’s final line of the night? “Tell Belle I love her and she was right — I will see her again.” Cue a feels attack.

All in all, this was a great character-driven episode, and though Snow and Charming’s feuding didn’t do much, it all led to working with Tinker Bell again, and we’ll see them storm Pan’s camp next week. Considering that Henry finally gave in and is embarking on his own journey to Skull Rock, who knows what will happen, but at least we have the hope that our favorite pairings will be reunited, right?

We give this episode 4 stars. What about you? Rate it for yourself below!
