Pretty Little Liars Review: Season 4 Premiere — “‘A’ Is for A-l-i-v-e”

The long hiatus is over, Pretty Little Liars is back in our lives, and all is right in the world. Season 4 kicked off with a high stakes premiere (Season 4, Episode 1: "'A' Is for A-l-i-v-e") that picked up right where we left off after the Season 3 finale.

This episode was jam-packed with action and answers. But was it a good start to the new season? Read on for Wetpaint Entertainment's review of the episode, and then share your own thoughts.

The episode kicked off right where we left off, with the Liars in shock over the trunk. There was a dead pig in it, which would have been a letdown if it hadn't quickly turned out Wilden was really dead, too. Cue an exciting montage where Mona tried to prove herself by spewing secret after secret.

So, what do we know about Wilden? The Liars are afraid that Red Coat is trying to set them up for his murder. He was one of the Queens of Hearts (yes, there were two). Jenna confronted Emily, telling her that Wilden was her friend, and then expressing worry: Everyone who saw Ali the night she died (which includes Wilden) is turning up dead. How is Wilden connected to the "B" team, exactly? We want to know more!

Worse: "A" sent the Liars a threatening message implying something in Wilden's casket would be incriminating to them. The town gathered for his funeral, including the Liars, who noted a mysterious woman in a veil, and then sought out the casket. Spencer and Mona ended up finding it ... and in it, Ashley Marin's phone. Oh. No. They were also introduced to hottie Officer Holbrook, who claimed to be a "good guy." Hmmm. Maybe the new cops are well intentioned, but it turned out "A" recorded the Liars messing with Wilden's car, so either way the they might run amok of the law once again.

Meanwhile, Hanna decided the best approach to dealing with Mona was to bond. Or pretend to. Mona could tell what was up, so in a gesture of good faith she gave Hanna the hard drive with the video of Hanna's mom hitting Wilden. According to her, it was the only copy. Can we believe her? We want to, but come on ... It's Mona. We're loving her new, ambiguous relationship to the Liars. She's one of the best parts of the show at this point.

In romantic relationship news, Aria and Ezra have decided to see other people (ouch), Emily and Paige had an amazingly sweet scene in which Paige proposed they go to Stamford together and they declared love for each other, and Toby and Spencer seem to be doing well...

...But Toby is very distracted. "A" kept texting him about his mother, and in a flashback we saw that Ali visited his house one day while his mother was sleeping late/apparently sick. So, she knew something was up with his mom. Interesting. We can't wait to learn more.

Overall, this was a strong start to the episode. We appreciated the answers, though we thought they came a little too rapid fire, without time to sink in. We loved the creepy moments, especially the young girls with the Liar dolls (we have chills just thinking about it). Emily and Paige's moment melted our heart. And, overall, we're excited to what happens next.

That said, it didn't have as many gasp out loud moments as we would have expected or liked from a premiere. We give it 4/5 stars. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
